Congratulations to Andrea Hui, a fourth-year veterinary student at the Royal Veterinary College, on being awarded a Morris Animal Foundation Veterinary Student Scholar grant and the AVTRW Diamond Jubilee Award! Andrea’s groundbreaking work on equine endothelial cells is helping fill a critical knowledge gap in veterinary science. These cells play a central role in equine health—regulating blood pressure, clotting, inflammation, and vessel formation—yet remain poorly understood in horses. Developing new tools to study their function could result in improved diagnostics and treatments for equine vascular diseases. We’re proud to support young researchers like Andrea, whose dedication and innovation are shaping the future of animal health.

We're thrilled to announce funding for seven groundbreaking studies aimed at improving feline health and well-being. These research projects, led by top scientists at institutions worldwide including University of California, Davis, University of Sydney and University of S?o Paulo, will address critical issues such as viral infections, cancer treatment, chronic disease management, and genetic mapping. “Despite the number of cats in our homes, funding for feline health research still lags behind support for dog health,” said Dr. Kelly Diehl, Senior Director of Science Communication at the Foundation. “Now more than ever, we need science that directly addresses the unique medical challenges cats face.” These studies, set to begin later this year, will advance veterinary knowledge and improve the lives of cats for generations to come. A new publication by a Morris Animal Foundation-funded research team at the University of Milan reveals a link between stress, inflammation, and cognitive decline in aging cats. The study, published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science, found that older cats with higher stress and inflammation levels showed reduced social cognition. Subtle behavior changes in senior cats aren’t just “normal aging”—they could be early signs of cognitive decline. Regular vet check-ups should include behavior assessments to catch issues early. Morris Animal Foundation is proud to announce funding for four new wildlife Fellowship Training grants, supporting the next generation of wildlife health researchers. These grants provide essential funding to help early-career scientists build successful research careers in a strong mentoring environment. This year’s recipients will tackle critical wildlife health challenges, from disease transmission between livestock and wildlife to the impact of climate change on polar bears: Dr. Eberle Yarborough, Oregon State University – Studying disease patterns where livestock and wildlife interact in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Fernando Vilchez-Delgado, Tufts University – Investigating herpesviruses in trafficked primates in Peru. Dr. Kayla Buhler, Universitetet i Innlandet – Examining how climate change-driven diet variations affect disease in polar bears. Dr. Jorge Rojas-Jimenez, The University of Georgia – Developing a population health surveillance program for Baird’s tapirs in Costa Rica. Two of these fellowships were made possible by the generosity of Sally R. McIntosh, a dedicated Foundation supporter whose passion for veterinary science and commitment to diversity in the field leave a lasting impact.
