A treat to interview Ian McCrae of Orion Health for the Morgo Podcast we released this morning. Ian started making software to connect up systems in the health industry over 30 years ago. They were the first company in Auckland to have an internet connection! Today Orion employs over 500 people, which will fall to about 120 after the sale of 3 products. What I didn't realise until Ian and I had this chat is that Orion has created a number of significant products and spun them off, making money to fund more product development. Today we released a Morgo Podcast where I interview Max Arshavsky, co-founder & CEO about the journey. He and Sebastian Wieczorek started the company as an academic project using solar power to power powerful superconductor magnets to steer a satellite. Seven years later they have their first commercial projects! When asked what was hard, Max Arshavsky replied, "All of it". We kicked off Morgo's 2025 program with a fabulous evening - great conversation and hospitality at Delta Insurance Group offices in Auckland. Big thank you to all who attended and Delta team for hosting.

Anybody think the healthcare industry could be improved? What about if providers were paid for results rather than how many specialist hours they can charge you? There is a worldwide movement towards funding for outcomes - collecting outcomes data. Covid accelerated this shift. And in the vanguard is an amazing company in Auckland, The Clinician. Over 50 people in the company around the world, about half of them PhDs. The founders are old friends: Ron Tenenbaum - a neurosurgeon, and Tamaryn Hankinson - who has a background in neuroscience but worked in the pharmaceutical industry and then in data science. The Clinician has led the way in providing a digital platform for outcomes based healthcare funding. They started with a pilot project in Singapore and now have customers/projects in Singapore, Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi and Japan! Kitea Health is addressing a worldwide issue of healthcare delivery: people with chronic health conditions are managed reactively, waiting at home while their symptoms deteriorate and then eventually going to hospital. Kitea aims to provide at home monitoring - catching changes early, avoiding false alarms and improving outcomes. Their first product is a fully implantable tiny pressure sensor that is placed in the brain for hydrocephalus management, allowing patients to make at home brain pressure measurements to track their health.
