What kind of digital identity is acceptable for governments, citizens, and relying parties while ensuring compliance and accessibility at the same time? The discussion around digital identity is gaining momentum, particularly after eIDAS 2 in the European Union, which mandates a state-issued Digital Identity Wallet for citizens by 2026. While many countries in the European Union already have some form of digital identity through different #eIDV schemes—such as #BankID in Sweden, #eID in Germany, and #DigiD in the Netherlands—the EU Digital Identity Wallet is distinct for being interoperable across the 27-country bloc. As global e-commerce grows, powered by a strong preference for digital-first systems, state-issued digital identities may not be sufficient for granting users access. This is a major concern raised by experts regarding digital identity wallets. Bianca Lopes highlights: "Expect more growth—especially with initiatives like eIDAS 2.0 in Europe. But with growth comes complexity. The challenge is #interoperability: different regions, different schemes, same need for trusted verification."
