This morning, I posted about the hidden cost of ignoring IT maintenance. Not long after, I had a meeting with a law firm that insists on doing their own maintenance but just wants us to handle Helpdesk support. (They have zero IT skills) Now, I went to law school. I even have a law degree. But you won’t catch me telling a lawyer how to do his job. Why? Because that’s not what I do for a living. I protect law firms by managing their IT. Meanwhile, this guy tells me he’ll handle his own IT; - he just wants me to deal with the fallout when things go sideways. Talk about short-sighted. Everything’s fine until someone loses an eye, and then guess who they’ll blame? I’ve written about this before, but here’s the bottom line: If the business owner isn’t in the conversation, you’re wasting your breath on someone who has no real stake in whether the business survives. Owners tell their IT managers or office managers to cut IT costs, but when their client data ends up on the dark web, they’re suddenly looking for someone to blame. And the reputational damage alone is enough to sink most small businesses. Why be cheap? Do you pick the lowest-bid doctor for heart surgery? The bargain-bin vet to operate on your cat? So why don’t you care about your client data getting leaked or your employees’ personal info being exposed? The BBB lets people see how businesses conduct themselves. Maybe we need an “I Don’t Give a Shit” badge for companies that ignore cybersecurity. At least that way, their clients would know upfront what they’re dealing with.
