More Trees Now

The harvesting season has arrived! We had a triumphant beginning last week in Grangewood Park, Northampton. With enormous thanks to Mick Lorkins and the Northampton Woodland Community Volunteers, East Hunsbury Parish Council and the group Climate Action - West Northamptonshire???? With almost 30 volunteers, the team managed to rescue 260 young trees which were growing in the shade of larger trees, therefore unable to get the sunlight and water they need. By rescuing these the mother tree has a chance to flourish, and the younger trees are given a second chance. Want to help? Yes! Over 400 saplings were rescued in Northhampton last week. Thanks to Mick Lorkins and the group Climate Action-West Northamptonshire (CA-WN) ???? We rescue saplings that grow in places where they cannot mature, to give away for free so they can be planted in places where they can. Everyone can pick up free, local saplings. ??More Trees Now - Restoring ecosystems on both harvest- and planting location ?? ?? More Trees Now is (originally) a Dutch initiative (MeerBomenNu) that saves excess saplings. Every tree makes hundreds of saplings a year, many of which are removed in routine forest management. By scooping out these saplings, runners, and cuttings and planting them in places where they can mature, we can create new ecosystems elsewhere. ?? When you plant a sapling you provide a new home and source of food for all types of species. But álso on the harvest location you improve biodiversity. Biodiversity is the plurality and complexity of life any given natural system can support. A healthy ecosystem has a rich biodiversity. By removing saplings from (for instance! ;)) bogs, we create space for bog-species to flourish, improving the biodiversity there as well. A win-win! ?? ?? More Trees WOW! - Every sapling turns into a mature tree! ?? ?? More Trees Now is (originally) a Dutch initiative (MeerBomenNu) that saves excess saplings. Every tree makes hundreds of saplings a year, many of which are removed in routine forest management. By scooping out these saplings, runners, and cuttings and planting them in places where they can mature, we can accelerate tree planting throughout the world. ?? When you plant a sapling, create a whole about 1/3 bigger than the root system and bury it until you reach the root collar (the bit of discoloration between the root system and the stem). If you're planting a cutting, make sure it's minimally 50 cm into the soil. It needs to reach the water table so it can create roots and grow into a mature tree. ??
