I'm always honored to speak with Nathan Richman and Lauren Loricchio about IRS Criminal Investigation and its critical role in financial crime enforcement. On Feb. 10, the DOJ asked Treasury for assistance in the administration’s crackdown on undocumented immigrants. Many may not realize that IRS CI has spent decades working alongside other agencies to combat multinational criminal organizations. IRS CI agents specialize in tracing illicit funds—targeting tax and money laundering violations—while partner agencies investigate the Specified Unlawful Activities (SUAs), including those tied to drug cartels that often involve undocumented individuals. IRS CI’s expertise is in following the money, uncovering financial crimes that fund criminal enterprises. Redirecting these highly trained agents to focus on immigration-related law enforcement duties—while they are certainly capable—is an inefficient use of a valuable resource.
