?? A major transition is urgent for beef and soy production in South America. Recent report released by our partners at the IFACC Initiative calls for USD$2 billion in catalytic capital by 2030 for the agricultural transition. The Amazon, Cerrado and Chaco regions of South America are food production centers and vital stores of carbon, water and biodiversity.? ? With the right approaches, all three biomes can be protected while continuing to grow agricultural production. ?? Our Moore Foundation President, Harvey Fineberg, recently joined France Córdova and Michael W. Nestor, PhD in emphasizing the critical role of philanthropy in addressing funding gaps in the scientific community.? ? They highlight that philanthropy is an essential partner in advancing the national science agenda, offering unique strengths such as: ?? Speed and Flexibility: Philanthropic organizations can quickly respond to emerging research needs, unlike government funding, which often involves lengthy review processes. ?? Versatility and Risk-Taking: Philanthropy supports bold and unconventional ideas that may struggle to secure traditional funding, fostering groundbreaking discoveries through a willingness to take risks. ?? Long-Term Vision: With no immediate financial return expectations, philanthropic organizations can invest in high-impact research with long-term goals. As highlighted in a recent article from Inside Philanthropy, these attributes make philanthropy indispensable for filling crucial gaps in science funding. ? ?? At #COP16, Bolivia has signed a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) to build a Project Finance for Permanence (PFP) initiative. ?? This Bolivia PFP focuses on freshwater, forests, and communities, and supports 18% of the country's territory covered by the national protected area system as well as three Indigenous protected areas. Emphasizing the importance of Indigenous leadership, the MOU recognizes Bolivia's Indigenous territories and 200,000 people living in protected areas as true partners and co-managers. To help achieve this long-term financial stability for Bolivia, the Moore Foundation is collaborating with the Ministry of Environment and Water of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, World Wildlife Fund, the Foundation for the Development of the National Protected Areas System (FUNDESNAP), the National Protected Areas Service (SERNAP), The Nature Conservancy, and Wildlife Conservation Society.
