Throwback Thursday! Seeing as March is Women's History Month, what better time to resurface one of our all time favorite photos from the Moore County Airport. In 1931, Amelia Earhart landed at Knollwood Field, which became the Moore County Airport of today. She is pictured with Lloyd Yost, the airport manager at the time. The hangar seen in the background can still be found at the Moore County Airport, as can more photos of Earhart during her time visiting Knollwood Field. Amelia Earhart was a trailblazing pilot and the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic. She set records, broke barriers, and inspired generations with her fearless determination. In 1937, during an attempt to fly around the world, she disappeared over the Pacific, leaving behind one of history’s greatest mysteries. Her legacy still inspires those who dare to push boundaries. #ThrowbackThursday #KnollwoodField #MooreCountyAirport #PrepareForTakeoff #FirstInFlight #AviationHistory #History #Pinehurst #KSOP #AmeliaEarhart

Who's ready for some history?! This weeks installation will be covering the first deployment of a Major U.S. ground combat unit to Vietnam, the landing of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) at Da Nang, South Vietnam. Courtesy of historical articles and insights from KSOP Line Technician and Marine Corps Aviator, Barry R. Fetzer. "Da Nang, for those assigned there not long after 1965, was not so exotic, despite its exotic-sounding name and the unopposed, almost celebratory, landing of the first major combat forces in Vietnam back then. But on this day in 1965, there was a sense of exoticness, despite the brass’s desire for none of it. On this day in 1965, “U.S. Marines of the 9th Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) arrived at Da Nang, South Vietnam. The brigade consisted of two Marine battalions. One made an amphibious landing and the other arrived by air by my own future squadron, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron (HMM)-365." On this day, March 6, 1961, marked the first flight of the Boeing B-52H Stratofortress, the final iteration of the iconic intercontinental strategic bomber. While historical accounts present conflicting dates, some sources claim that this flight occurred on July 20, 1960. To streamline this narrative, we'll adopt the widely cited March 6, 1961 date, as per Boeing. Commissioned by the U.S. Air Force, 62 B-52H Stratofortresses, serial numbers 60-0001 to 60-0062, were contracted on May 6, 1960, at the Boeing Wichita plant. A subsequent order for 40 more, with serials 61-0001 through 61-0040, followed. Boeing B-52H-135-BW Stratofortress 60-0006, captured in a striking aerial portrait, is identified by some as the inaugural B-52H to take flight. Distinguishing itself from earlier variants, the B-52H underwent substantial reengineering. Lighter and structurally distinct from its predecessors, it boasted increased internal fuel capacity for an extended unrefueled range. Originally conceived to carry Douglas GAM-87 Skybolt air-launched ballistic missiles armed with a 1-megaton W-59 thermonuclear warhead, the B-52H's mission shifted when the Skybolt program was canceled. The North American Aviation AGM-28 Hound Dog air-launched cruise missile took its place, with a unique feature allowing the missile's engine to be fueled from the bomber before launch. This subsonic, swept-wing strategic bomber, measuring 159 feet, 4 inches in length and with a wingspan of 185 feet, was initially operated by a six-member crew. Over time, the gunner position was phased out after 1991. The B-52H featured a vertical fin developed for the B-52G, standing at 22 feet, 11 inches—noticeably shorter than its predecessors. A fundamental departure from earlier models was the replacement of the Pratt & Whitney J57-series turbojet engines with the more efficient Pratt & Whitney Turbo Wasp JT3D-2 (TF33-P-3) turbofans. These engines, known for reduced noise and absence of dark smoke trails, each produced a maximum thrust of 17,000 pounds. #KSOP #OnThisDay #Boeing #Stratofortress #MooreCountyAirport #AviationHistory #MilitaryAviation Photos via U.S. Air Force

Who's ready for some history?! This weeks installation will be covering "Sucker Holes" which are temporary breaks in clouds or bad weather, giving a false impression that the weather is improving, courtesy of historical articles and insights from KSOP Line Technician and Marine Corps Aviator, Barry R. Fetzer. This weeks Installation also features Barry's own experiences flying through these breaks in the clouds. "I have memory of a terrifying moment during my flight training at NAS Pensacola flying the T-28 Trojan back in the late 1970’s. I may be embellishing the terror I seem to remember, but not too much. Flying solo in a big, radial engine aircraft. I was in command of all that power! What a thrill! It must have been toward the end of the T-28 training syllabus because once you soloed that aircraft and did a solo cross-country flight and a solo night flight, back then you were quickly sent either to helicopter training at NAS Whiting Field or to fixed-wing training at NAS Beeville in Texas." TONIGHT, sky watchers will have the rare opportunity to witness a seven-planet alignment in the night sky. Known as a planetary parade, this event occurs when planets appear to line up as they orbit the Sun, according to NASA. "While they aren’t once-in-a-lifetime events, planetary parades afford an uncommon opportunity to look up and appreciate our place in our solar system," NASA public engagement specialist Preston Dyches explained. "With diverse worlds arrayed across the sky before our very eyes." The alignment will be visible just after sunset, during twilight, when the bright sky won’t obscure the view. Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Mercury, and Neptune will form a distinct arc stretching from east to west. While some of these planets will be visible to the naked eye, others may require binoculars or a telescope for optimal viewing. #KSOP #NASA #PlanetaryParade #MooreCountyAirport #Aviation #SpaceExploration
