Thrilled to have hit the stage at #RBTC #DisruptUp in Roanoke, Virginia on Nov 14-15, diving into future of health tech innovation, AI, and workforce development. Big thanks to Erin Burcham and the Roanoke - Blacksburg Technology Council team for curating great programming, and bringing high tech training providers and companies to invest in the region and state more strategically. Great to connect with liked-minded individuals: Frederic "Dr. B" Bertley, Bernie Florido, Uma Marques, Natesha Ross, Aileen H. Here were my two key takeaways: 1. Broadening Healthcare Tech Talent Hubs:?Intuitive's Blacksburg facility highlights rising efforts to grow healthcare tech talent beyond Boston and San Francisco, and the proximity of strong engineering institutions (Virginia Tech, University of Virginia), community colleges, and CTE programs nearby creates the right ecosystem for young talent to participate in the Commonwealth of Virginia. 2. Urgent Need for Upskilling:?Early career and experienced healthcare workers need the right blend of high tech AI, robotics and advanced manufacturing skills necessary to remain competitive nationally and globally in the economy of the future. The key barrier here is NOT technical. Rather, it is on how efficiently workers can leverage modern tools to reduce the learning curve, accelerate output, and problem solve with complex tasks more efficiently and accurately (ex. using ChatGPT, Roboflow, etc) Moonshot is experimenting with this concept through a 1-day AI upskilling workshop for non-AI savvy healthcare professionals. ?? Transforming Medical Imaging with AI & Segmentation ?? ?? The integration of AI in #medical imaging is revolutionizing how we approach diagnostics, especially in analyzing brain tumors. Traditionally, methods like #MRI and #CT scans have been invaluable, but they often require manual interpretation, which can be time-consuming and prone to variability. This is where AI comes in to make a significant impact. I’ve been exploring using Ultralytics #YOLO11n-seg for brain tumor segmentation, trained on a comprehensive dataset from Roboflow. The model classifies four distinct types of tumors, offering precise real-time segmentation: There's still room for improving accuracy, i.e. using large models. I used the `yolo11n-seg` model ??. ?? Key Features ??? Improve diagnostic accuracy by identifying abnormalities with high precision ??? Accelerate workflows for radiologists, reducing the time from scan to diagnosis ??? Minimize human error, leading to more consistent and reliable results ?? Why It Matters: Segmentation takes imaging beyond detection, empowering healthcare providers with detailed, actionable insights for better outcomes. Running with eyes closed. I often find myself running with my eyes closed when I’m excited to begin a new endeavor in my life. I first heard the song "Running With Our Eyes Closed" by Jason Isbell about a year ago. When it played from my playlist after my 18th birthday, I caught myself reflecting on how much I have grown as a person and what has contributed to that growth. A team and I from Harvard Medical School’s Moonshot Scholar program are collaborating on a stealth AI project in urodynamics. This project focuses on improving diagnostics and treatment using artificial intelligence. At the same time, I’m working with people around the world on my ongoing mission to provide pediatric medical technology to underserved populations. I’m a drummer in a band called “Free Drinks,” which has had two successful gigs. Through these experiences, I’ve had life-shaping conversations with people I am so thankful to have in my life. There have been quite a few times in my life when the phrase “running with my eyes closed” has felt particularly relevant. One notable instance was during my internship at The Mullings Group, where I worked on a research project for surgical robotics companies—something I had never done before. After several weeks of effort, I received constructive feedback that highlighted the importance of fully understanding a task before diving in headfirst. This lesson was especially valuable for long-term projects that require sustained effort and focus. Finding the balance between diving into new opportunities and approaching them with careful planning has been a key part of my personal growth. I tend to want to “do it all,” but I’ve learned that this ambition can sometimes cloud my focus on the task at hand. Over time, I’ve developed the ability to balance running with my eyes closed and concentrating on what’s going to be most valuable for the team, company, or my future. This balance has been profoundly influential in everything I do. For instance, while drafting a manuscript for the AI urodynamics project, I’ve realized that I need to fully understand the physics of urodynamics, current standard procedures, and existing literature before even beginning the introduction. Similarly, when running Envision MedTech, Inc, I carefully consider where medical devices are going and how they will be used to ensure their greatest impact. In my band, we plan our setlist before we start rehearsing. These upfront investments in planning help me save time and achieve better outcomes in the long run. While there’s value in the excitement of starting something new, I’ve learned that preparation and deliberate action allow me to grow and contribute more effectively. Balancing these two approaches is a skill I continue to refine, knowing that both play an essential role in achieving meaningful results. Santosh founded Moonshot, a summer immersion experience for high school students in partnership with Harvard Med Science, based on the need for "10x thinkers" to build the talent pipeline necessary to tackle the world's greatest healthcare problems.
