I was at an event recently when I was asked the proverbial networking question. It’s a question I hate, but one I have come to expect and accept as part of the culture. That question “what do you do?” Is heard in conferences and meetings all over the world. It’s an attempt to define you in the eyes of the questioner as a means to get to know you. My answer is usually “I do a lot of things”My answer has confused some, and turned away others. I have lost out on deals, because people couldn’t see my value outside the lens of the boxes they are used to putting people in. The reality is I am multi-talented, intellectually curious and hate being limited. From the moment I gave myself a second chance at life, I knew I was going to maximize my life. It’s the only true calling I know. After being in a box for 19 years, the last thing I want is to be placed in a box or limited to one thing. I want to stretch, imagine, change my mind and ultimately maximize life on my terms. Have you felt boxed in or limited by other people’s inability to see all of you? Moral of the story: You only get one spin on this sphere, so maximize it and live it up!
