As managing partner of several businesses at Union Square Hospitality Group, I frequently collaborated with Jeremy Rhodes, the director of accounting. We bonded over our love of food and music, always striving to learn each other’s roles. Jeremy was keen to understand operations and the guest experience, and he generously shared insights about financial trends. Although he was a data junkie, he knew there was a story behind every number. So, it was no surprise when I learned he was opening a hospitality business. During the depths of the pandemic, Jeremy and his wife Ali Chetkof Rhodes moved out of the big city and took up baking. Inspired to do something unique, Jeremy created the stuffed pizza bagel. After many months of trial and error (lots of error) with different flavors, Moonrise Bagels was born. Jeremy left USHG, and they launched their first shop in Woodstock, NY, in 2021. Reviews were gushing, and they even managed to generate a little profit. Last month, they opened their second location in Poughkeepsie. So many of us sit on our hands and wonder why the world doesn’t hand us opportunities. Then there are those like Ali and Jeremy who create the opportunity. What started as a crazy idea became a mission. Combining Ali’s marketing expertise, Jeremy’s financial acumen, and their mutual love of food and hospitality, they created a gift for the community.
