???Jakarta’s Waste Management Challenge: A Field Research Adventure??? In collaboration with?Mitsui Indonesia, we embarked on a field research journey to tackle Jakarta’s mounting waste management crisis.??? With a rapidly growing population and inadequate infrastructure, the city is grappling with environmental and public health concerns.??? Our mission was to understand the behaviors, values, and pain points of Jakarta residents, as well as the challenges faced by waste collectors.???? Through in-depth interviews, observations, and behavioral experiments, we gained invaluable insights into the current state of waste management in the city. We discovered that residents are willing to separate waste if provided with better systems and guidance.???Our behavioral experiment demonstrated a promising 54% participation rate and an impressive 84% accuracy rate in sorting waste when proper garbage bags were readily available.?? However, we also uncovered a significant lack of public awareness regarding recycling efforts. ?? This highlights the need for targeted education and awareness campaigns to drive positive behavioral change. Our field research findings have provided a solid foundation for future decision-making and the development of innovative solutions to address Jakarta’s waste management challenges.
