"Before joining the Moody, I had no prior experience in art whatsoever. . . But something about the gallery guide position at the Moody intrigued me. I thought that working there might help me understand art better and, through that, gain a deeper insight into myself. And I was right. . ." As a public-facing institution at Rice, the Moody facilitates cross-campus and community collaboration through the arts.
关于我们
The mission of the Moody Center for the Arts at Rice University is to encourage creative thinking and original expression, enrich curricular innovation, and promote cross-campus and community collaboration through transformative encounters with the arts. We are a public-facing institution that connects the arts at Rice to the greater Houston community. The Moody mounts three exhibitions a year in its galleries, curates numerous temporary and permanent public art installations throughout Rice's campus, and hosts performances, conversations, classes, and hands-on workshops. All of these events are open to the public. By centering these efforts on generative partnerships with artists, scholars, and students from various disciplines, the Moody presents unexpected and everchanging entry points into the arts which bridge communities and areas of interest, thus realizing its mission.

“I think there is an intersection between art and engineering ? they both involve making, and the best engineering products and engineers share something in common with artworks and artists,” Favour Williams, a Rice University senior majoring in mechanical engineering, said. We're delighted to have this partnership with Rice University School of Engineering! Read on to learn about the first-ever art and engineering social coordinated by Lauren Cross and Erica Harris hosted at the Moody. https://lnkd.in/d7mUuRTK

We opened "Do Ho Suh: In Process" last weekend and were honored to share the exhibition with a record number of attendees. Amber Elliott's article in the Houston Chronicle touched on the themes in Suh's work that resonate so deeply with Houstonians. https://lnkd.in/gWTzhNGB

Showcasing an internationally renowned?artist's methodologies, research, and collaborative practice for the first time in their career would be a honor, but it's even more exciting that the artist is Do Ho Suh and one of his featured collaborations includes Rice civil engineering students. Featuring materials highlighting the artist’s creative process together with?select finished works, "Do Ho Suh: In Process" (opening September 6) includes a special iteration of the artist's long-term initiative,?The Bridge Project--?which imagines a bridge connecting the artists’ homes in London, New York, and Seoul-- created by Rice students.? ? Facilitated by Kalil Erazo,?Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of Civil an Environmental Engineering at Rice University, this unique project connected Suh with a team of civil engineering students - Natalie Pellette ’24, Sabrina Talghader ’24, and Wanda Yuan ’24 -?to conceive a?viable structure addressing real-world challenges such as the extremes of the oceanic environment, the structural integrity of the bridge, and the elements needed to support human life as visitors travel across the open expanse.?In a central section of the exhibition, the Moody will display the resulting student designs, together with drawings and animations by the artist.

Inclusive, interdisciplinary arts programming has the power to foster interpersonal and intellectual connections critical to building a rewarding civic life. Often, the first step in leveraging that benefit is finding a welcoming environment where you can indulge in your creativity and feel free to explore new ideas. Summer Jam is an annual invitation to the Houston community to find that place here at the Moody.
