Hear from Dr. Mary Vader - Pediatrician at Pediatric Associates and hospital Board Chair - discuss her work as a Hospital Chaplain. The primary role of the Chaplain is to provide spiritual guidance and care to patients and their families. Why did you choose to become a Chaplain? I think my interest in chaplaincy began when I was a first responder as a medic on the Wichita Falls Fire Department in college. As any first responder will tell you - we see things we will never unsee. That goes for my child abuse practice as well. The fire department had peer counselors as does ours here in Montrose. Law enforcement agencies do as well. I think my interest in the chaplaincy program grew out of these, at least for me. I also knew it was something I could do as I entered the autumn of my Pediatric career. Fortunately, I found a Clinical Pastoral Education program that offered the 4-year degree close by in Grand Junction. What is the most rewarding aspect of being a Chaplain? I think the most rewarding part is the opportunity to bring a little bit of comfort to someone in crisis. Do you visit with patients and families of all faiths? I do visit patients and families of all faiths and those who may not have a faith or church of worship. My first patient at MRH was Buddhist! If patients are interested in utilizing your Chaplain services, how can they request to meet with you? The best way to request Chaplain services is to speak with your nurse.
