Montessori for Social Justice

教育管理组织

We commit to social justice, racial equity, and an anti-bias, antiracist application of Montessori education.

关于我们

Public Montessori is growing rapidly with 500 public Montessori schools enrolling over 125,000 students. They serve a diverse population of students: over half are students of color; almost half are living at or near the poverty line. Some non-profit Montessori schools work with similar populations in the private sector. We know that Montessori offers children the executive functioning skills that link to long-term school success, skills that are missing from other successful public education reform models like “No Excuses” charter schools. Yet even the most successful of these public Montessori schools can still have achievement gaps by race, a disproportionately white teaching force, and enrollment obstacles like preschool tuition fees, lack of transportation and information gaps that can prevent the most vulnerable students from enrolling. We want to offer low income students and students of color a spectacular Montessori education, and convince policy-makers that Montessori is an effective model of education reform. Our mission: Montessori for Social Justice is a network of educators, parents and community members committed to offering Montessori for all students, particularly in underserved communities.

Today at SXSW EDU we packed the room to talk about what it truly means to be an unapologetically anti-racist educator—and let me tell you, the energy was electric. Standing room only. A testament to how many of us are ready to challenge the status quo and dismantle the racism embedded in our schools, institutions, and yes, even in ourselves. We are not asking for permission to do this work. The generations of activists and educators before us didn’t ask for permission either. Because as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” This moment, this movement—it’s bigger than any one of us. Our commitment to Embracing Equity in education is non-negotiable. And I’m more fired up than ever to keep pushing forward. Who’s with me? #AntiRacistEducation #EquityInAction #JusticeInEducation #SXSW

What’s IN ? in 2025: 1. Empowering educators with equity-centered training to create transformative classrooms. 2. Prioritizing community-centered approaches that uplift student and family voices. 3. Expanding access to scholarships for educators committed to advancing equity. 4. Leveraging data-informed practices to drive systemic change. 5. Building a movement of hope, action, and collective liberation. What’s OUT ? in 2024: 1. Relying on one-size-fits-all solutions in education. 2. Ignoring the voices of marginalized communities in decision-making. 3. Perpetuating performative allyship without meaningful action. 4. Upholding outdated systems that perpetuate inequities in schools. 5. Avoiding the need for radical change in education. What INs and OUTs would you add to the list??: Drop it in the comments!

I’m so honored and grateful to be back at the Dual Language Education of New Mexico La Cosecha conference as both a presenter and sponsor for this critically important gathering. Our languages, our mother tongues, are precious; they are worth preserving. Children should not have to sacrifice their mother tongue, their ethnic identity, their culture, and ultimately, their humanity in order to be successful in school or society. In fact, all of this is our superpower. It makes up who we are and connects us to our ancestors. I hope you’ll join me tomorrow at 1:30 MT for an in-person workshop (my final one as CEO of Embracing Equity!). Together, through engaging, interactive play and reflection, we will dive deeper into why it’s so vital that we embrace equity and center an anti-racist approach in all dual language learning programs and environments. Check out our partners, Keres Children's Learning Center, for a model of what is can look like in action. A more just and equitable way is possible. Thank you to the W.K. Kellogg Foundation for continuing to fight for racial equity and believing in the power of embracing it together. #LaCosecha #DualLanguage #LinguisticHealing #EmbracingEquity

Embracing Equity will be at Dual Language Education of New Mexico La Cosecha conference on Thursday, November 14, 2024 at 1:30 pm MT! Check out our session: "Championing Equity in Bilingual Education: Embracing Anti-Racist Frameworks and Lens" Our dynamic and highly interactive presentation will provide educators and community members with the tools and knowledge they need to promote equity and inclusivity within dual language education. Dual language education holds immense promise for promoting linguistic diversity, academic achievement, and cross-cultural understanding. However, without intentional efforts to address systemic racism and embrace equity, these benefits may remain out of reach for many students. It is essential that we infuse our dual language programs with anti-racist practices to ensure that every child feels valued and respected for their unique cultural and linguistic background. Since founding Embracing Equity, I was intentional about steering clear of Founder’s Syndrome. It was crucial to me that Embracing Equity’s work not be bound to my personal identity or vision but instead evolve with the collective wisdom and dedication of our entire team. The work we do has never been about one person; it’s about a shared commitment to equity that will continue to flourish far into the future. Together, we’ve built a professional home that’s honest and optimistic, aspirational yet grounded, and heartfelt with a commitment to seeing, hearing, and supporting all our learners and colleagues. Embracing Equity is a thoughtful, caring, and bold nonprofit organization. I am grateful for this opportunity of a lifetime: to have manifested a freedom dream into reality. I’m also thrilled to be able to let it go to let it grow and pass the baton to Rashi, the best leader I know. Read the press release: https://lnkd.in/gUfk-Byk
