Today at SXSW EDU we packed the room to talk about what it truly means to be an unapologetically anti-racist educator—and let me tell you, the energy was electric. Standing room only. A testament to how many of us are ready to challenge the status quo and dismantle the racism embedded in our schools, institutions, and yes, even in ourselves. We are not asking for permission to do this work. The generations of activists and educators before us didn’t ask for permission either. Because as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.” This moment, this movement—it’s bigger than any one of us. Our commitment to Embracing Equity in education is non-negotiable. And I’m more fired up than ever to keep pushing forward. I’m so honored and grateful to be back at the Dual Language Education of New Mexico La Cosecha conference as both a presenter and sponsor for this critically important gathering. Our languages, our mother tongues, are precious; they are worth preserving. Children should not have to sacrifice their mother tongue, their ethnic identity, their culture, and ultimately, their humanity in order to be successful in school or society. In fact, all of this is our superpower. It makes up who we are and connects us to our ancestors.
