Big news in the fight against plastic pollution! The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finalized its National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution, a transformative step for the U.S. toward addressing the plastic pollution crisis at all stages of its lifecycle—from production to the harm it causes for communities, ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. At Monterey Bay Aquarium, we applaud the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Administrator Michael S. Regan, and The White House? for taking this actionable, all-of-government approach to protect human health and the environment. The facts are clear: The U.S. generates more plastic waste per capita than any other nation. Research also shows that most Americans are deeply concerned about this issue and support comprehensive solutions at both national and international levels. The U.S. has a responsibility and opportunity to drive solutions at a local-to-global level. This national strategy, developed at the request of Congress, builds on recommendations from leading experts, including the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s 2021 report that I chaired. By aligning science-backed solutions with strategic funding, the strategy provides a robust roadmap to reduce plastic waste, cut harmful emissions, and address the disproportionate impacts on frontline communities. The U.S. now has a unique opportunity to build on this momentum during the final negotiations for a global plastics treaty in Busan, South Korea. California’s innovative policies—reducing single-use plastics at the source, addressing microplastic pollution, and amplifying citizen voices—offer a powerful blueprint for what’s possible when science-based, collaborative solutions take center stage. I look forward to attending #INC5 starting Nov. 25 and working toward a strong science-based treaty. Today’s national strategy announcement signals a long-overdue shift in how the United States? safeguards our ocean, our people, our communities, and our future.
