Our mission: to inspire conservation of the ocean
关于我们
The mission of the nonprofit Monterey Bay Aquarium is to inspire conservation of the ocean. Our diverse and dedicated team works in many ways to assure the future health of the ocean and the people who depend on a healthy ocean for their survival. Our living exhibits and visit programs are considered among the best in the world. We offer free education programs for more than 100,000 schoolchildren and educators each year -- and our new Bechtel Family Center for Ocean Education and Leadership is taking that work to a new level. Rigorous science underpins all of our work to advance policies that promote ocean health in the United States and internationally. Our respected Seafood Watch program is a global leader, giving businesses and consumers the tools to transform how fish are caught and farmed around the world. Our award-winning exhibits feature the rich diversity of marine life along California’s central coast -- from sea otters and kelp forests to jellyfish and sharks. Our newest exhibition, "Into the Deep / En lo Profundo," features never-before-see animals from the deep ocean. We attract nearly 2 million visitors a year and engage 3 million followers through our social media channels. Our education programs are shaping a new generation of science-literate ocean conservation leaders, and giving educators better tools for ecosystem-based learning. We promote science-based action on behalf of key species like sea otters, sharks, and Pacific bluefin tuna. We've advocated successfully to create marine protected areas, eliminate ocean plastic pollution, and end to the shark fin trade, and we support policies to address climate change and ocean acidification, which threaten ocean health, and our own survival.

Out in the open ocean, Laysan albatrosses like Makana can’t escape the effects of #PlasticPollution. These incredible seabirds often mistake floating plastic for food, with devastating consequences for themselves and their chicks. That’s why the Aquarium is participating in the final negotiations toward a #GlobalPlasticsTreaty, which conclude this week. Our team, led by Chief Conservation and Science Officer @Margaret Spring, is advocating for a strong science-based treaty to protect wildlife, our health,?and the future of our planet. https://lnkd.in/gSGPNNXW #albatross #INC5 #PlasticsTreaty International Science Council Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL)

As the world community works this week to shape a strong and ambitious #GlobalPlasticsTreaty, we're learning more -- on a daily basis -- about the many ways that #PlasticPollution threatens human health. The latest research indicates that microplastic particles and PFAS, the so-called "forever chemicals" that don't break down in the environment or the human body, are even more toxic to life when they are combined. We must stop the tide of plastic production at the source, and identify and manage the chemicals used to manufacture plastics so we can protect and restore the living ocean and other ecosystems on which we depend. A positive outcome in the #PlasticsTreaty negotiations this week at #INC5 in South Korea can put us on that path. I'm so glad that the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Chief Conservation and Science Officer Margaret Spring is there with her team to advocate for a science-based approach to plastics. https://lnkd.in/gsTaVust International Science Council Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) University of Birmingham The Guardian

It was such an honor to share the stage on Thursday night with Nicholas Negroponte (founder of the MIT Media Lab) and Jennifer Lotz (director of the Space Telescope Science Institute) for a "conversation on imagination" at The Arthur C. Clarke Foundation 2024 Unleash Imagination awards. Many thanks to Scully Steve for leading a fascinating discussion about the ocean, the universe, AI, and the limitless possibilities for the future. Many thanks as well to the students and others who raised important issues during the Q&A. It was so great to have an opportunity to elevate the importance of the ocean in this forum, and to share some of the accomplishments of the incredible teams at Monterey Bay Aquarium and MBARI. I'm so grateful that Margaret Spring is in Busan representing the International Science Council and Monterey Bay Aquarium at this critical moment, working to advance a strong global #PlasticsTreaty. We know the scope of the problem and we know what to do. Now it's time for the international community to #ActOnPlastic.
I shared my outlook on the final negotiations for the #PlasticsTreaty #INC5 with Chemistry World. We need a final treaty to address plastic at every stage of the life cycle, including monitoring, and must establish a science process to provide advice as needed. https://lnkd.in/gaX5nabR Jamie Durrani, International Science Council

A big step in the right direction! #CircularEconomy #OceanPlasticPollution #GlobalPlasticsTreaty #SourceReduction #leadership
Big news in the fight against plastic pollution! The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has finalized its National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution, a transformative step for the U.S. toward addressing the plastic pollution crisis at all stages of its lifecycle—from production to the harm it causes for communities, ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. At Monterey Bay Aquarium, we applaud the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Administrator Michael S. Regan, and The White House? for taking this actionable, all-of-government approach to protect human health and the environment. The facts are clear: The U.S. generates more plastic waste per capita than any other nation. Research also shows that most Americans are deeply concerned about this issue and support comprehensive solutions at both national and international levels. The U.S. has a responsibility and opportunity to drive solutions at a local-to-global level. This national strategy, developed at the request of Congress, builds on recommendations from leading experts, including the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine’s 2021 report that I chaired. By aligning science-backed solutions with strategic funding, the strategy provides a robust roadmap to reduce plastic waste, cut harmful emissions, and address the disproportionate impacts on frontline communities. The U.S. now has a unique opportunity to build on this momentum during the final negotiations for a global plastics treaty in Busan, South Korea. California’s innovative policies—reducing single-use plastics at the source, addressing microplastic pollution, and amplifying citizen voices—offer a powerful blueprint for what’s possible when science-based, collaborative solutions take center stage. I look forward to attending #INC5 starting Nov. 25 and working toward a strong science-based treaty. Today’s national strategy announcement signals a long-overdue shift in how the United States? safeguards our ocean, our people, our communities, and our future. At Monterey Bay Aquarium, we’re proud to support implementation of this plan and call on leaders nationwide to join us in advancing these critical efforts. Together, we can turn the tide on plastic pollution. https://lnkd.in/g6DDfp3K
