Long before modern breweries, African communities were perfecting the art of beer-making. In Burkina Faso and across the continent, brewing—often led by women—has been a tradition for generations. At Montclair Brewery, our head brewer and co-owner, Leo, grew up in Burkina Faso, watching women brew dolo, a millet-based beer central to social life. That history fuels our passion for brewing today. As the first Black-owned brewery in New Jersey, we honor this legacy. Beer is Black history. Brewing is Black history. And we are proud to continue that tradition—crafting great beer while breaking barriers in an industry where Black brewers are still underrepresented. Come taste the history! Montclair Brewery offers a unique selection of New Jersey brewed craft beer. Local-inspired and culturally intriguing beers are featured. Whether it is the African baobab fruit, Caribbean or African hibiscus, passion fruit or other unique ingredients, the husband and wife owners’ African and Caribbean roots are often infused into traditional and not-so traditional beer styles. The result is an eclectic offering and original taste for both craft beer devotees and those new to craft beer. There is usually a Montclair Brewery style for everyone.

Happy Birthday Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. a pivotal leader in American history! This holiday commemorates his efforts to achieve equality and justice for African Americans and other marginalized groups through nonviolent resistance. It also reflects on his advocacy for economic justice, voting rights, and ending racial discrimination. All still critical topics 50+ years later. As the first majority Black-owned brewery in NJ, we are happy to embark on this journey of economic justice. Shout out to National Black Brewers Association and Optimism Brewing Co and all of you for helping us to get there.?
