One month ago, Butte lost a great man, Frank Gardner. Gardner was the one to convince Dennis Washington to revive mining in Butte. He would become the first president of Montana Resources, until he retired in 1998. “Frank was a Butte guy from humble beginnings, and even though he tried his best to stay out of the mines, he ended up being one of the most influential and important miners in the long storied history of Butte — a true Butte legend,” Tim McHugh, a vice president at MR and longtime friend, said at a celebration of life service for Gardner at the Front Street Station in Butte last week.

Montana Resources expects to hit a vein of high-grade copper by late August that will increase production for the next few years.

“Everybody’s excited about getting there. The team out in the pit has exceeded expectations; they have just hit it hard,” said Mike McGivern of Montana Resources.

BUTTE – This week, the Dennis & Phyllis Washington Foundation announced a grant to support construction of the Butte CommUNITY Hub. The grant awards $15 million to Butte-Silver Bow over three years and provides for the potential of an additional $2.5 million in matching funds. Butte Silver-Bow Chief Executive, J.P. Gallagher, and Montana Resources President, Jack Standa, both celebrated the grant.

An executive order Trump signed Tuesday calls for boosting the domestic copper industry by investigating the national security implications of imports and weighing tariffs as a response. “The United States has ample copper reserves, yet our smelting and refining capacity lags significantly behind global competitors,” the order reads.

MONTANA - A new bill introduced by U.S. Senator Steve Daines, Senator Tim Sheehy, Congressman Ryan Zinke, and Congressman Troy Downing would ban the import of critical minerals from Russia. The proposed legislation, which is intended to protect local jobs, targets minerals such as platinum, palladium, and copper, which are available in the U.S., including Montana.
