Look what I am reading... Winner of the Best Business Book 2025 of the #LibbyAwards We are excited to share a powerful book that caught our attention: "When We Are Seen" by Denise Young, one of Silicon Valley's pioneering C-suite executives and Apple's former chief of HR. Young's journey as one of the first women of color to reach the C-suite in Silicon Valley is both inspiring and enlightening. Her book combines personal memoir with actionable insights on embracing authenticity in the workplace and fostering genuine inclusion. As the co-creator of the Apple Store cultural experience and a trailblazer under both Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, Young offers unique perspectives on leadership, empathy, and the power of being truly seen at work. ?? For those interested, Young will be speaking in the hashtag#OpenAccess Literary series at Montalvo Arts Center on March 27th at 7:00 PM. It's a rare opportunity to hear directly from a leader who's reshaped corporate culture and championed authentic leadership. • We at Montalvo Arts Center are overwhelmed with gratitude for everyone who joined us at the 23rd Annual Arts in Your Classroom Teacher Conference: "Neurodiversity: Fostering Inclusion" this past Saturday! Special thanks to our incredible keynote speakers Ryan Neale, founder of the Neurodivergent Youth Empowerment Fund, and Nicole Kim, Executive Director of the College of Adaptive Arts, whose insights inspired us all! We were fortunate to have amazing workshop facilitators including Gena Pacada, Cristin Reichmuth, Julie Kwok, and Kristi Carvajal who shared practical strategies for integrating arts and UDL principles to support neurodiverse learners. From hands-on creative activities to meaningful discussions on student agency and arts standards, the day was filled with learning, collaboration, and joy. The conversations around how arts integration can create inclusive learning environments that honor each student's unique strengths were truly transformative. Thank you to everyone who participated in making this day special - from our presenters to every educator who came ready to learn and share. Together, we're building more inclusive, creative classrooms that celebrate neurodiversity! Special thanks to our Director of Outreach & Education, Cynthia Taylor, and all of the Montalvo team for their support and to our sponsors for making this possible. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic in the comments below. ?? Thank you to our Sponsors and Community Engagement Partners SV CREATES, SANTA CLARA COUNTY Office of Education, Inclusion Collaborative, San Jose State University (SJSU), and College of Adaptive Arts. #ArtsInEducation #NeurodiversityInclusion #TeacherPD #ArtsIntegration #UDL #InclusiveEducation #Montalvoartscenter

  • Dear friends, I hope this message finds you well in what has been an unprecedented disaster for the people of Los Angeles. Our hearts are broken seeing the profound devastation from the fires and the widespread destruction and suffering of this community. The incalculable loss from this phenomenal catastrophe is staggering. It is times like this when we can feel hopeless. The overwhelming emotions of grief and shock can make us feel helpless. As we know, these events can bring immense stress and uncertainty, particularly for those in the arts community who may be struggling not only with the loss of their creative spaces and their life’s work, but also with the emotional toll this tragedy can bring. Our Lucas Artists Residency has always been a sanctuary for artists—a place where creativity can flourish, and radical hospitality is felt. In this spirit, Montalvo will be reaching out to our community of Lucas Artists Fellows in the Los Angeles region. We will provide artists with opportunities for connection and healing as they navigate this immense challenge. It is our intention that this support will inspire hope and a path to recovery and renewal for our artists. With my love to all, Angela Torre McConnell Executive Director

Executive Director at Montalvo Arts Center

Today is a special day for me, my 15th anniversary at Montalvo. I could not feel more grateful to our esteemed Board of Trustees and all of our Trustee Alums for their passionate dedication and inspirational generosity. I cannot underestimate the impact of my colleagues; their individual and collective contributions and unwavering support of my leadership over these years has made all the difference. I have learned and continue to learn from all of you how to be a stronger Executive Director. Together we have expanded Montalvo’s reach broadly into our community, and created one of the strongest nonprofit art centers in the Bay Area— enhancing the lives of all people through engagement with the arts, and making Montalvo a place where all people feel an authentic sense of belonging. I feel blessed being here (still!) and so deeply grateful for all of you. ?? www.montalvosarts.org #montalvoarts
