We are weeks away from Election Day, so we thought we would take the opportunity to address a few common questions we get every four years leading up to this event. Our favorite and most common question is, "How will the election affect the markets?" Our answer: "Not much." Since 1944, the S&P 500 has gained an average of roughly 10.7% every presidential election year. Of course, there can be some massive exceptions. For example, in 1980, the S&P rose over 25%. In 2008, it fell over 38%. But there’s a danger in using averages to predict what will happen. Take the "Presidential Election Cycle Theory," for instance. Once upon a time, many people believed that U.S. stock markets were always the weakest in the year following a presidential election. This was the case for Franklin Roosevelt, and it also held true for Truman and Eisenhower. But in George H.W. Bush's first year, the S&P 500 rose 27%. In Bill Clinton's first year, it rose 7%. Barack Obama's first year saw the markets climb 23%. In Donald Trump's first year in office, the S&P rose 19%. Most recently, in 2021, the S&P 500 jumped nearly 27% after Joe Biden was elected. The “Presidential Election Cycle Theory” clearly doesn’t hold water. And that’s true for actual election years as well. An average merely shows you what has already happened, not what will happen. (Side note: this is why you often see the financial industry emphasize that “Past performance does not guarantee future results.” Because it’s true!) What essential questions does your Wealth Manager ask you? Do they *????????????* understand where you are now and what you would like to accomplish? These may seem like easy questions, but they are the foundation we use at Monon Wealth Management to understand our clients and build trusting relationships. In our exciting interview with Joe Pohrer, he experienced these questions and more as he got to know Darrick Hutchens and his advisory team. "???????????? ?????? ???????????????????? ???????? ????????????" is the subject line from one of our fund managers, Dimensional Fund Advisors. Ask investors what kind of return they expect from stocks in any given year, and many will respond with the market’s historical average return. The S&P 500 Index from January 1926 through December 2023 has been a little over 12%. Unless you have a crystal ball, that’s a reasonable guess in any given year.? ? And yet, history shows us that what we get from stocks is likely far from the average. Since 1926, only 15 out of 98 years had returned within five percentage points of the 12.2% average. The average deviation in the other 83 years was over 18 percentage points. Talk about an uncommon average!? ? Actual returns can deviate from expected returns because information and circumstances change. If the news is better than expected, markets may go up. Of course, the reverse is true if the news is disappointing. In a world with so many potential news sources—the economy, elections, geopolitical conflict—it shouldn’t be surprising that we often receive higher or lower returns than the long-run average. ** Past performance is not a guarantee of future results. Actual returns may be lower.? Disclosures:? All expressions of opinion are subject to change. We are officially in October!? That means we welcome in the fall holidays and all their traditions. As we’ve considered these traditions, going through a corn maze strikes us as one of the more fun and interesting. As people, we’ve been fascinated with mazes for thousands of years. They have come in many shapes and sizes. The oldest surviving hedge maze (an ancestor to the corn maze ??) is the Hampton Court Maze in London, which was started in 1690. After that, it’s not a great leap to using other tall plants to build mazes. So, when Don Frantz and Adrian Fisher designed and built the first corn maze in the US in 1993, it wasn’t that big of a leap. Their little maze covered just 3 acres. The Guinness World Record for the most giant corn maze is 60 acres!?? Why do we do these mazes?? There are all kinds of possible explanations, but we like this one, given by Katie Colony, a co-owner of a corn maze: “I think it comes down to tradition and having some of those special times with family year after year.”?? One of the reasons we love this time of year is that it comes with traditions. These traditions bring families together and bring smiles to kids’ faces. And, like mazes, some of these traditions have been happening for a very long time. That’s a great thing! We would love to hear some of your favorite fall traditions. Please share them in the comments. Who knows, maybe it will become someone else’s new tradition.

There’s an old saying in investing: ???????? ???? ?????? ???????????? ?????????? ???????????? ?????? ????????????. One of Monon Wealth's fund companies, BlackRock, Inc., provides insight into why staying invested during an election year is crucial. Chief Investment & Portfolio Strategist, Americas at BlackRock Gargi Chaudhuri released her "Fall 2024 Investment Outlook". The report is filled with investment advice, but the attached chart immediately jumped out. While Americans worry over who to vote for and how each candidate will help or hurt their investments, this chart makes it unequivocally clear that, rather than invest in one party or the other, you should invest. “Investors who held the course as political winds changed earned nearly double those who shifted their strategy based on the election in the last decade — a trend only magnified over the very long term,” Gargi wrote. “Rather than tailoring a basket of favored exposures dependent on the election outcome, we prefer looking to common ground — beneficiaries of infrastructure and nearshoring investments stand out as two key opportunities,” she continued. Key Takeaways from BlackRock's 2024 Fall Investment Outlook: ?? ?????? ???????? ???????? ???? ?????? ??.??. ???????????? ???? ?????????????????? ???????? ?????? ???????????? ????????????????.?However, a cooling economy is more vulnerable to exogenous shocks, and we look ahead to potential volatility-inducing events, including the U.S. election. ?? ???????????? ?????? ?????????? ?????????????????????? ?????? ?????? ???? ?????????????? ????????????.?We believe modestly extending the duration to the belly of the curve early in the cutting cycle will be most rewarded. ?? ?????? ???????????? ??????????????????????, ???? ???????????????? ?????? ???????????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ??????????????????????, ???????? ???? ?????? ???? ????????????????????.?Near-term pullbacks can create opportunities to allocate to high-quality companies, though we remain cautious on mid- and small-cap names. Stay informed about the latest trends in wealth management. Our team at Monon Wealth Management is here to help. #IndustryUpdates
