Computational Intelligence for Managing Complex Systems

关于我们

Moneta is a company that grew out of HRO-ML Health, a team of researchers at Texas Tech University who investigated ways in which machine learning could support patient safety in healthcare. Our mission has grown to include the application of computational statistics and data science in the development of software products and intelligence in supporting the performance, reliability, and safety of complex organizations across a broad range of industries. We bring together modern day talent in automation and software development with knowledge of data science and computational statistics. Moneta is a member of the Innovation Hub at Texas Tech University, an incubator of start-up companies that bring deep technologies to market for economic development and societal benefit.

Why do some disasters go viral on social media and others gain limited interest and commentary? Watching the reaction to this week's floods in Valencia, I’ve been asking myself why some disasters go viral on platforms like this and others gain limited interest? The Spanish floods, which it is estimated will likely lead to over 90-100 fatalities, has from my perspective gained quite a muted response and limited commentary.?Contrast this with plane crash, a submarine loss a bridge collapse or a building fire, or a perhaps an organisational scandal and there is much greater traction. These technology and organisational disasters to go viral and people are quick to comment. The social impact and human tragedy is often similar, but the response on social media can differ greatly. But is there really a difference between these types of events and is any distinction false? This is of course a factor of the algorithm, my connections and location, but I’ve believe that there’s something more to it. What makes one disaster interesting for social media and another less so? Some reflections and many unresolved questions in this article. I consider why some disasters gain more interest on social media, exploring: ?? Natural vs. technological disasters ?? The bizarre and abnormal disasters ?? An organisational versus a natural disaster ?? Issues of proximity and currency ?? Social expectations and our response to different sectors ?? The concept of psychic numbing?

Stop Chasing Perfection: It's Time to Embrace Survival We've been taught to control, to eliminate risk, to chase perfection. But in a world that's increasingly complex and uncertain, that approach is fundamentally flawed. Beyond Control: Scientific Scientific management works for machines, not people. In today's complex world, we need to move beyond control and embrace a culture of resilience, fueled by psychological safety. Survival Requires More Than Safety: Safety is an outcome, not a guarantee. We need to equip people to thrive in complex, dynamic environments, and psychological safety is the cornerstone of that survival. Psychological Safety is the Key: It's not a luxury; it's the backbone of a thriving organization. It fosters the adaptability, collaboration, and continuous learning needed to survive in a world of uncertainty. Want to learn more about how to shift to a survival-first approach and build a truly resilient organization? This week I’m revisiting one of my favourite metaphors, ???????????????? ??????????????. The metaphor describes measures that provide a perception of safety and security, yet actually do very little to keep us safe. It was coined by Bruce Schneier. Underlying the metaphor is the distinction between objective vs. subjective approaches to risk.

How does the language used in traffic incidents frame how we view the event? Studies show that the way road traffic incidents and workplace accident are reported uses passive voice. For example, when a driver struck and injured a pedestrian (active tense), this will be reported in using passive voice, such as “pedestrian struck by car.” This tense and passive voice of the sentence frames how we view the incident. When reporting incidents, the media also depersonalize the driver. Instead of a pedestrian getting struck by a driver, the media will frequently report the incident as “struck by a car.” This framing has been proven to determine how we understand incidents, and approach issues such as fault, accountability and intentionality. Linguistic framing also affects how we approach where improvement should be focused – on the pedestrian, driver or the transportation system? “The safety field has plenty of examples of hierarchical (Parent-Child) terminology. For example: ? Accident investigations ? Cardinal Rules ? Safety officers ? Violations ? Compliance officers Who doesn’t love being investigated by an officer? ???? Team members often lament the fact that safety managers treat them like children, and, given the prevalence of the above ‘safety’ language, it’s not difficult to understand how they reach that conclusion – it doesn’t have to be this way.” Read the article here???? https://lnkd.in/gExcA7xk #CareFactorProgram #FromComplianceToCare #SafetyLeadership GYST Consulting Pty Ltd
