We were honored to join Christ Community Church in Little Rock for the recent beam-signing and topping-out ceremony of their new facility! The final beam, signed by the congregation and the design and construction team, has now been placed, marking a major milestone in the project. It was inspiring to see the C3 community gather on site to witness this significant step in their journey and to explore the construction progress being made by Kinco Constructors. From former farmland to future classrooms! Today, we celebrated the groundbreaking of the new Woodland Junior High School, designed to create a benchmark for healthy and sustainable educational environments. The school’s mass timber structure and innovative biophilic design reflect a commitment to student and staff wellness, while the site uniquely honors Fayetteville’s agricultural past. Repurposed barns will become flexible outdoor classrooms and a greenhouse, offering students hands-on learning and a direct connection to the land. This new Woodland campus, opening for the 2027-28 school year, will serve up to 900 seventh and eighth-grade students. Eleven East Pleasant focuses on contextual integration and the creation of community space. This five-story, 75,000-square-foot mixed-use student housing project in downtown Amherst, Massachusetts, strategically completes a U-shaped courtyard with its neighbor, fostering a shared environment. A key feature is the "Rift," a ground-floor passageway that bisects the structure, establishing distinct arrival points and anticipating future urban connectivity. This element extends vertically as a visual break in the elevations, manipulating the building's massing to create a robust urban frontage along East Pleasant Street. A solid base of brick and concrete supports a delicate, draped wood rainscreen that envelops the upper floors, creating a visually compelling surface. The fenestration is integrated with the rainscreen, breaking from traditional multi-family housing layouts by expressing a horizontal layering that emphasizes texture and depth. This approach aims to enhance the building's visual interest and create a more nuanced relationship with the surrounding urban context. We're excited to finally reveal the design for the new Woodland Junior High School campus, a groundbreaking project for Fayetteville Public Schools! Situated on a scenic 27-acre site at the northeast corner of Joyce Boulevard and Crossover Road, the proposed campus will set a new standard for educational environments, prioritizing the health and wellness of students and staff through innovative biophilic and sustainable design strategies. This new location for Woodland Junior High School, slated to open for the 2027-28 school year, will serve up to 900 7th and 8th-grade students in a visionary 160,000-square-foot, three-story facility. The site, once devoted to agricultural pursuits and featuring a pair of historic barns, offers a unique opportunity to blend modern educational needs with the preservation of Fayetteville’s agrarian heritage. These barns will be repurposed as flexible outdoor classroom space and a greenhouse, providing students with hands-on learning experiences and a tangible connection to the land. Central to the design is a focus on biophilic principles, integrating natural light and materials to create a healthy and stimulating learning environment. The building’s mass timber structure, a key sustainable element, not only reduces the project’s carbon footprint but also brings the warmth and natural aesthetic of wood into the learning spaces. modus studio has been selected as a finalist for the U.S. Pavilion exhibition at the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia. The U.S. Pavilion will showcase an exhibition titled PORCH: An Architecture of Generosity, focusing on the porch as a central element in American architecture, highlighting its social, environmental, and democratic significance. The exhibition will feature a diverse range of American architectural projects and practices, including a new, contemporary porch extension of the U.S. Pavilion that serves as the site of interactive events and exploration of the evolving role of the porch in contemporary society. As part of the exhibition, modus studio's work will be featured within the U.S. Pavilion, contributing to the broader dialogue on the role of architecture in fostering generosity, connection, and cultural exchange. Our beloved Evans Tree House model is en route to Washington, D.C., for the upcoming exhibition A South Forty: Contemporary Architecture and Design in the American South. This exhibition, originally curated and organized by the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design in association with modus studio and The Oxford American, premiered at the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennale. It showcased the work of nearly forty architecture and design firms across the American South. The Evans Tree House model will now be on loan to the National Building Museum, along with materials from some of the country's most distinctive practices. The exhibition opens on February 15th.
