Dysfunction Junction I grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons.?If you’re like me, you probably remember “Conjunction Junction.”?It’s imprinted on my mind and made me think about the work that PMs do cross-functionally.??Or…maybe cross-dys-functionally? Dysfunction Junction, what’s your malfunction?? Scope keeps creeping, and there’s no reduction! Deadlines looming, tempers up, Can we please sell what's on the truck? Product managers are the conductors of Dysfunction Junction—a chaotic intersection where shifting priorities, stakeholder demands, and technical realities all collide. And guess what? You’re driving the train… without brakes, a map, or even much authority. The Reality of Product Management As a Product Manager, you have all the responsibility but little authority. Your job is to bring clarity to chaos, align teams that often don’t see eye-to-eye, and make decisions that rarely satisfy everyone. Here’s the kicker: you’re not just making decisions because they seem “cool.” Every choice is rooted in balancing factors like user data, technical feasibility, business goals, and market trends. Yet, no matter what you decide, someone will think it’s the wrong call. Welcome to the dysfunction junction, where tough calls are part of the journey. Here are a few tips to keep the train on track Communicate Early. Communicate Often. A PM without communication skills is like a train conductor without a whistle. The secret to managing Dysfunction Junction is enabling your stakeholders with details and context. Why are we prioritizing this feature? How does it align with user needs or business goals? What trade-offs were considered? If people don’t know the “why” behind your decisions, they’ll fill the gaps with their own assumptions. That’s where frustration and misalignment start. So, over-communicate. Explain the process, the data, and the rationale behind decisions. Even if they don’t agree, they’ll respect the transparency. Keep the Focus on the User. It’s tempting to get caught up in the whirlwind of internal politics and personal preferences. But at the end of the day, you’re not making decisions for yourself or your stakeholders—you’re making them for your users. The user’s voice is your compass, whether it comes from data, feedback, or usability tests. If someone questions your decision, point back to the user: “Here’s what the data tells us about their needs.” “This aligns with what we’ve observed in their behavior.” “This is the problem they’re trying to solve.” By anchoring every choice to the user, you cut through the noise of conflicting opinions and keep the train moving in the right direction. Remember: You can’t please everyone. Your job isn’t to avoid conflict or make everyone happy; it’s to drive the product forward. And while Dysfunction Junction can be chaotic, a good conductor knows how to keep things from derailing.
