?? Exciting News and New Beginnings ?? After a wonderful journey at Devengine.ca, it's time for me to embark on a new chapter. I am thrilled to announce that I will be joining Modernize?to contribute to their recruitment efforts and consultant development! First off, a huge thank you to Anton for giving me the opportunity at Devengine and Alex for all the knowledge and wisdom you've shared with me. Your guidance has been instrumental in my growth. It’s been an incredible journey! (That will continue with a bottle of wine somewhere soon ????) Now, I’m ready for new challenges and opportunities at Modernize. Big shoutout to Jonathan and Dana for bringing me on board. I’m really looking forward to what’s ahead! Here's to new beginnings, continued growth, and endless possibilities!??

What a mess… In summary: Slack, Salesforce-owned, is using users' content (e.g. messages, uploads, etc) to train its AI models used in their AI-powered apps. The insane product decision is that everyone is opted in by default - and if you want to opt out, the “companies or workspace administrators (not individual users) are able to request via email” (!) As AI products grow, our attention to ethics must grow just as fast. This is an extremely poor product decision, although it’s clear that someone in Slack/Salesforce think otherwise. Things I wish I knew as a 22 year-old engineer: 1. Software engineering is mainly about people, not code. Technical expertise will only take you so far. 2. There's a time to hack together a house of cards and a time to build a masterpiece. Learn the difference. 3. Prioritize simplicity, not cleverness. Most code is read many more times than it's written. 4. Sales, marketing, and other departments do equally important work to engineers. Respect them. 5. The most important engineering ideas are timeless. Don't obsessively learn the latest tech. 6. Engineers who can write and make complicated ideas simple have outsized influence. The IDE isn't the only place to do valuable work. 7. Code only matters if it solves a real problem for a real person.
