We spoke with Jonathan Schneider, CEO of Moderne, about building enterprise software that transforms how companies manage technical debt. Here are the key go-to-market lessons from their journey: → Challenge market narratives. When everyone pushed PLG in 2020, Moderne chose enterprise sales. They built a hybrid model: open source for users, enterprise sales for buyers. → Build trust before velocity. Handling customer source code required exceptional trust. They invested $60K in brand development pre-funding and took 12+ months to land their first customer, prioritizing security over feature velocity. → Reframe technical value. Evolved messaging from "developer productivity" to "tech stack liquidity." Connected code transformation to C-suite priorities like vendor consolidation and system modernization. → Listen for solution-seekers. Their first major customer had already created an internal pitch deck for the solution they needed. Sometimes your best prospects are already trying to solve the problem. → Position across categories. Found success by straddling existing and new categories: "New category is where you have opportunity for new price points... but you need to fit enterprise budget line items." These insights from Moderne demonstrate how challenging conventional wisdom and building deep trust can create a new enterprise software category.
