My take on the 9 slides founders need to fundraise I spend a lot of time helping founders with their fundraising pitches --> and my feedback almost always centers around the points in this deck Hopefully some founders out there find it useful :)

Angel Investing, VC or starting your own fund - how does it all work? Intimate & high-quality conversations at my first Modern Angels panel featuring Lauren Schwartz, Founding Partner at 20SALES and Max Mullen?co-founder of Instacart, moderated by our very own Amanda Robson who has started her own fund! The sage advice that I've taken away from the night: - Doing due diligence on early-stage/pre-seed companies often comes down to a vibe check. But if you want to get specific, there are really only 2 things you need to worry about - Founder & Market. Do you think the founder has what it takes to pull it off? Is the market opportunity there? - As an investor, pick a sector that you want to specialize in (e.g?consumer). That way, people will have you in mind when consumer start-ups come up. But don't worry they'll still send you all the other deals too, it's just a smarter way to be remembered and better for networking. - How to start a fund? Start as an Angel - once you can provide a track record on your investments, all the other doors of possibilities will open - Funds come in all shapes and sizes, including family funds, syndicates between friends and Solo GP. There are multiple avenues to pursuing a VC path. - Investing as a Limited Partner (LP) in a fund can be an even better learning opportunity than being an Angel. You get to see in bulk which startups the funds passed on in a quarter vs who they invested in and how they did their due diligence. People pay more for an MBA and probably won't learn as much. The panel gave me a sense check on how I've been operating as an Angel (trusting myself to do due diligence, using it all firstly as a learning opportunity) and opened my eyes to how I could potentially do things differently (not sleeping on LP opportunities). As a bonus, I also met Cheryl Kellond ?? of Play Money! for the first time IRL. If I were to do one thing differently as an Angel, it would be to start my angel journey via Play Money! They allow you to write checks as small as $1.5K, which means my budget would have stretched further, and I would have a larger (more diversified) portfolio.?
