The image is 14” x 18” and the frame is 16” x 20.” Valued at $1,500, the winner will get free delivery and installation within the Denver-Boulder or Aspen areas or free shipping everywhere else. “This image really sums up our family’s time in Japan,” Kripke said. “The Meguro River is lined with hundreds of cherry trees, and over our six months in Tokyo, we walked along its banks daily.” The work is part of Kripke’s latest exhibition, “Expansion,” which opens on Saturday, April 5 at 2304 Pine St. in Boulder. He took photographs gathered during his time in Tokyo and extracted and intensified the elements that first captivated him—color, form, texture, light. 关于我们
Modern In Denver is Colorado's leading design magazine celebrating commercial and residential architecture, art, interiors, and our creative community! We celebrate modern design and living in Colorado. But we balk at the walls of limitation that a title constructs! We’re much more than a magazine. MID is also a platform for discussing and exploring outside-the-box ways of living that are inspired by modern design and practices. And just what is modern? Well, we heard an ugly rumor that modern design connotes a cold and sterile environment. That particular brand of modern certainly may exist. But we’re friends with the type that greets you at the door with your house slippers and an honest mix of materials and methods. Modern can be comfortable, and we’re here to show you how. We think good design can be an integral part of real life right here in Denver. In fact, we’ve seen it. And we want to tell you about it. We find it important to connect the designs we feature to the particulars of our place, our community, and the people in it. This makes it real, practical and possible for great modern design to become part of your life.

In the new spring issue we explore the potential in venturing into the unknown: whether it’s Jamie Kripke and his family moving to Tokyo, Kazu Oba creating new dishware for restaurants all over the country, or Studio B Architecture + Interiors and Leap Interior Design collaborating on a 1951 Usonian-style home. It’s #throwbackthursday here at Modern In Denver and we’re looking back at one of our favorite restaurants. Located above LoHi on the fifth floor of 2930 Umatilla, El Five is a restaurant that offers more than just delicious food—diners are also treated to quite the view of downtown Denver. The restaurant was designed by BOSS.Architecture, LLC and opened in 2017 and in the ensuing years it has become a favorite spot for those seeking out unique flavors from places like Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East. El Five is the perfect blend of design and function, transporting guests above the city and all over the world. Images: James Florio . . . #modernindenver #magazine #elfive #restaurants

America is brimming with mid-century modern homes that are true masterpieces. You can find them all over the country and the best part is, many of them are open for people to explore on their own. We gathered some of the highlights, including Fallingwater in Pennsylvania, the Gropius House in Massachusetts, and The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands in California. Another snowy day got us thinking about the beautiful property Kevin Stephenson, cofounding principal of BOSS.architecture, designed and built near Alma and Fairplay. We featured the home in our winter 2022 issue and wrote about how Stephenson slowly built his family home piece by piece, allowing himself time to iterate on design decisions and come up with an end result that blended isolation with connection. The home’s embrace of the natural world is something BOSS.architecture has continued, as can be seen in Cherry Hills home we featured in this year’s winter issue. As builders seek out better and more sustainable ways to construct projects, many are going back in time to the raw materials the planet provides. This has led to earth building becoming popular again as an approach that can help lower the carbon footprint in residences and buildings. Part of the green building and eco-architecture movement, these approaches use local materials like straw, clay, and wood to enhance ecological and human health in the built environment.
