A Lesson in Leadership… from My 3-Year-Old The other night, my son Brayden was struggling with some big emotions. At first, it was easy to think, “Well, he’s just three.” But deep down, I knew there was more to it. After he calmed down, I sat him on the kitchen counter and simply asked, “Can you tell Mommy and Daddy why you feel so angry or sad? We really want to help you.” His response? “Everybody turns things to me.” At that moment, it hit me—Brayden, as the big brother, often carries expectations far beyond his years. Gavin, his baby brother, is still learning, and without realizing it, we’ve expected Brayden to just understand more. But he’s still just a little boy, too. This moment reminded me of something powerful: how often do we, as leaders, parents, or business owners, place silent expectations on those around us? How often do we assume people will just “get it,” instead of creating a space where they feel safe to speak up? Whether at home or in business, true leadership isn’t about assuming—it’s about listening. It’s about making sure those around us feel valued, heard, and supported. That night, I made sure Brayden knew his feelings were valid. And in return, he reminded me of a lesson I’ll carry with me forever. Let’s lead with empathy. Let’s listen more.
