A Journey into Sustainable Energy-Episode3?? Guess what? Yes, you guessed right. I have embarked on another journey to deepen my expertise in Energy Systems Engineering. I challenged myself to take the MPPE-Modelling Policy and Political Economy course offered by the Climate Compatible Growth #CCG at The Open University. This course has enriched my understanding of the relationships between energy modelling and policy making. It has equipped me with the analytical skills necessary to evaluate future modelling policies while considering socio-economic trends, technological advancements, and demographic shifts. Through theoretical course reviews and practical case studies, I have gained valuable insights into how effective policy-making can drive sustainable energy practices and support the energy transition process. This knowledge empowers me to contribute meaningfully to the ongoing transition toward cleaner energy solutions. Some of the important insights I gained from the course are: ·??Interdependence of Systems: Strategies for aligning energy systems with economic and social policies. ·??Data-Driven Insights: Using data and modelling to predict energy needs and evaluate policies. ·??Stakeholder Engagement: Involving diverse stakeholders in energy policy development and collaboration. ·??Adaptability to Change: Adapting policies to keep pace with technological and environmental changes. ·??Sustainability Metrics: Measuring the sustainability and economic viability of energy practices. As I reflect on this educational journey, I am excited about the opportunity to apply these insights and work collaboratively toward a sustainable and clean energy future. “All models are wrong, but some are useful.” – George Box As modelling becomes an integral part of energy planning and policymaking, it has necessarily moved into areas where there is an increasing divergence in the viewpoints of stakeholders and contestation between different interest groups. I have, in this “Modelling, Policy, and Political Economy” course, learned about the policymaking process (Public Policy). I have gained insights into how systems modelling and scientific research informs and influences policy, and how policies and policymaking, in turn, influence modelling. Beyond modelling, and even beyond techno-economic analysis in energy modelling and planning, it is crucial to understand that non-technical factors also play an important role as drivers and constraints in policy decisions; political and social factors are key constraints. The most technically sound solution to a problem may not always be politically, economically, or socially feasible. Consequently, it is essential to “think politically”—to consider the political context in which a model is developed and used. Understanding the politics-policy-policymaking-political economy nexus is critical, as it directly affects decision-making and modelling outcomes. This course has provided a solid foundation for my next read: “Energy Crisis in Ghana: Drought, Technology or Policy?”, an academic anthology edited by Professor Abeeku Brew-Hammond and Professor Francis Kemausuor. I am grateful to Climate Compatible Growth #CCG and The Open University for yet another holiday gift.

Dear Network, For the past year, we have been working hard at Climate Compatible Growth #CCG#CCG to improve our capacity building offer, ensuring that we are serving to the needs of LMICs in the most effective manner. As a result, I am happy to introduce our newest capacity building service: The CCG Bootcamps. The Bootcamps capitalize on many of the CCG offers that majority of you are familiar with, including the Open Learn Collection, the Energy Modelling Platforms, and the Energy Modelling Community. Aimed to deliver more long-term, targeted, and deliverable driven capacity building support, the bootcamps come in three modalities: - The Scholars Bootcamp (SBC) - aimed at academics, the bootcamp offers a capacity building intervention at the end of which the participating group will publish an academic paper, - The Partners Bootcamp (PBC) - aimed at International Organizations wishing to outsource their capacity building activties, whereby the activities lead to a policy document of a sort (e.g. long term energy transition plan, decarbonization plan, etc.), - The Data-to-Deal Bootcamp (D2D-BC) - aimed at countries (with or without the support of International Organizations) who would like to undergo the D2D pipeline, aiming to unlock concessionary financing at the end of the engagement. Dear Network, In having worked with CCG for over 3 years now, I have had the privilege to design, deliver and manage a number of capacity building events. These capacity building events were originally created by the OpTIMUS Open Tools Integrated Modelling and Upskilling for Sustainable Development Community, and via CCG, we have managed to further develop, enhance and expand the capacity building offer for energy planning tools and otherwise. Looking back at both the work of the OpTIMUS community and CCG, it is with great pleasure that I would like to share with you our latest policy brief, highlighting 10 recommendations for capacity building in LMICs, authored by Vivien Foster, Carla Cannone and myself. In light of the upcoming G20 Global Energy Planning Coalition, we hope that this brief will serve of benefit to anyone engaged in capacity building in LMICs. These principles, based on our lessons learnt, have been our beacon for improvement, and we can proudly state that the Energy Modelling Platforms (EMPs) have only seen growth in the past 5 years.? Special thanks to Darlain Edeme and Vignesh Sridharan for reviewing the brief, and to the CCG team (Peter Allen, Simon Patterson, and Sarel Greyling) for the finalization of the document.
