Congrats to our partners at Target ALS! "In addition to its ethnically and racially diverse patient base, Baylor serves a large veteran population, a group known to have higher rates of ALS compared to the general public." #ALS #clinicalresearch
We are excited to share that Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX, has officially joined our Global Natural History Study as a new site dedicated to advancing ALS research. This study aims to generate the most comprehensive collection of longitudinal biofluid samples and data from at least 800 ALS and 200 healthy control cases. The study includes a collection of biofluids such as blood, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), speech and respiratory data, and detailed clinical, demographic, and environmental information to better understand the progression of ALS and drive breakthroughs in diagnosis and treatment. Baylor College of Medicine stands out with its uniquely diverse population. "The demographics of patients served reflects our diverse community here in Houston, Texas, with 52.3% of patients reporting as Hispanic, 22.5% African American, 17.9% Caucasian, and 7.3% Asian or other," says Dr. Lydia Jane Sharp, a Principal Investigator (PI) at Baylor College of Medicine. Target ALS’ commitment to enhancing global diversity in ALS research provides invaluable insights into our understanding of the disease biology. In addition to its ethnically and racially diverse patient base, Baylor serves a large veteran population, a group known to have higher rates of ALS compared to the general public. As Dr. James Orengo, one of the PIs at Baylor, explains, “Veterans have unique environmental exposures, including intense physical training and hazardous materials. It’s unclear how these factors contribute to developing ALS, but their increased incidence offers a unique opportunity to explore the role of environmental factors.” This new partnership is a major step forward in our mission to accelerate ALS research. By working with Baylor and other global sites, we aim to uncover new insights that will benefit those living with ALS, regardless of their background. In Friday's webinar (recording: https://lnkd.in/gWWCZ_hF) we discussed digital biomarkers that use audiovisual signals to assess how trial participants function and feel, analyzing their speech, language, facial movements, body movements, communicative and cognitive behaviors, and other traits. The discussion centered around a recent paper by Modality.AI’s Chief Science Officer Vikram Ramanarayanan titled?"Multimodal Technologies for Remote Assessment of Neurological and Mental Health." https://lnkd.in/gjz_NKPH.? (Unfortunately Vikram’s webcam wasn’t recorded, but his voice was?loud and clear.) https://lnkd.in/gWWCZ_hF #ClinicalTrials #clinicalresearch
