History was made in Aotearoa (New Zealand) today as thousands of Māori and allies take to the streets in protest against a proposed bill that threatens to reinterpret the Treaty of Waitangi—the foundational document between the Crown and the Māori people. The parliamentary session was powerfully interrupted by MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke performing a haka, a traditional Māori dance that is as much an assertion of resistance as it is a call to unity.
