As part of the #5WomenArtists project, aiming to call attention to women in the art world, MOCA highlights Joan Mitchell, an abstract painter with an impressive career and vibrant style. An exhibition of her works from the MOCA Permanent Collection, “Honoring Joan Mitchell,” is currently on view in celebration of what would be her 100th birthday. Joan Mitchell was a pioneering force in abstract expressionism, known for her bold use of color, dynamic brushstrokes, and gestural abstraction. Her career spanned over four decades, from her first solo exhibition in New York in 1952 to her passing in Vétheuil, France. Whether working with oils, pastels, or printmaking, Mitchell’s work was deeply rooted in her everyday experiences of music, poetry, landscapes, and even her beloved dogs. Her approach to abstraction was physically engaging and emotionally raw—creating works that reflect her connection to the world around her. As she once said, “I carry my landscapes around with me.” Join us this Women’s History Month as we honor her legacy as one of the most significant artists of the post-war era. “Honoring Joan Mitchell” is on view until June 15, 2025 at MOCA Jacksonville. @joanmitchellfdn #joanmitchell100 >> Joan Mitchell in Vétheuil, ca. 1980.
