(#paywall) "The reality is that all 67 #Pennsylvania counties have some form of #publictransit. Central Pennsylvania has several county networks that serve a diverse mix of populations... In rural communities, these systems really are lifelines; practically everyone who uses them needs them for crucial, basic needs. (P)eople everywhere rely on these rides to ... meet basic needs that are a necessary part of daily life." - Mobilify's Executive Director Chris Sandvig on the dire outlook for transit in Pennsylvania Pennsylvania Public Transportation Association Pittsburgh Regional Transit Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) Associated Pennsylvania Constructors Office of Governor Josh Shapiro https://lnkd.in/eSCH3rZE

A Republican president once said in his weekly radio address, “America can't afford throwaway roads or disposable transit systems.” It’s as true today as then. Governor Josh Shapiro has shown genuine leadership, giving us a good first start. But we can’t afford to continue this stop-and-start #publictransit funding cycle. It’s time for the administration and General Assembly to push and pull, to get us unstuck, and to get Pennsylvania moving again. For good this time. Thank you, Governor Josh Shapiro for your leadership. Housing and transit together make #pennsylvania more vibrant for everyone, a place where more people can thrive. We support these crucial proposals.
I applaud Governor Josh Shapiro’s acknowledgement and funding increase in areas that are focus key for my administration and the people of? Allegheny County, especially in transit, childcare, public safety, job creation, and housing. I am particularly excited about the plan to invest strategically in housing. His housing plan will help us build on County-level investments we’ve already launched — like?first-time homebuyer program, home repair assistance, affordable housing development, and tenant protection — helping us ensure that more families can call Allegheny County home. CONNECTers Crafton Councilwoman Kirsten Compitello, AICP and staff directors Joey Brantle and Tiffany Taulton, MSPPM, EcoDistricts AP used some heavy-duty thinking caps and networking muscles this weekend at the Transportation Camp hosted by Mobilify Southwestern Pennsylvania at Point Park University! Uniquely billed as an “un-conference”, T-Camp offers planners, developers, government officials, nonprofits, community activists, and residents ftom around the country a chance to come together to discuss how public transportation affects landuse planning and how to improve public transportation planning to serve more people, more equitably. Attendees suggested topics for the day during an opening breakfast that were then voted up or down. Then they went to one of the rooms for a discussion led by those whose suggestions had received the most votes. There were three workshop sessions and plenty of topics to choose from each time—such as: —“How should #housing density affect public transit?” —“#RightOfWay: When bikes, pedestrians, buses and trains all want the same space, how do we share/collaborate?” —“What #policies or incentives could increase the adoption of public transit over private vehicle use?” —“#UniversalDesign and #equity in the future of transit: how to ensure disabled voices are placed in the forefront of initiatives?” The conference ended with an engaging panel discussion between Director Kim Lucas, CPM of the City of Pittsburgh, Department of Mobility and Infrastructure and Billy Terry, MURP, Executive Director of the National Transit Institute (NTI). Many thanks to Chris Sandvig, Bethani Cameron, Elijah Hughes, Breen Masciotra, AICP, EcoDistricts AP, Ashley Cox, AICP, NOMA, EcoDistricts AP, Peter Quintanilla, Korawich Kavee, and everyone else who worked hard to put together this amazing event! #tcamppgh #publictransit #transitequity #accessibletransit #economicdevelopment

Yesterday, I volunteered at the Mobilify Transportation Camp, an event that used community-building activities like breakout rooms and games to spark discussions about transit. The most exciting part was that attendees could choose the topics for the breakout sessions, which fostered diverse perspectives and created opportunities to connect with others passionate about transit. In addition to volunteering, I participated in UrbanPlan, a program hosted by the Urban Land Institute. This exercise teaches the fundamental forces shaping communities by having teams design a city plan with legos. I was surprised by how much space is needed for parking! It was a fun time and look forward to getting involved again next year.
