The Chicago Architecture Biennial opened last week! As CAB’s Education Partner, Mobile Makers is thrilled to unveil “One Bench, One Love” designed by the CAB Youth Council, a group of teenagers from all sides of Chicago who spent three months exploring design and public space together. Their installation will be displayed alongside internationally celebrated artists and designers at the Chicago Cultural Center for the entire run of “This is a Rehearsal,” the 5th edition of CAB. We hope you stop by to engage with the installation soon! Read the project statement below: “One Bench, One Love” is a project designed by the Chicago Architecture Biennial (CAB) Youth Council, an advisory group of teenagers interested in architecture and urbanism. During the three-month program, Youth Council members learned about CAB themes, public space, and the design process to create an installation for “This is a Rehearsal”. Their project is a response to the lack of youth-specific third spaces and policing of teens across Chicago. Youth Council members collaboratively designed an ongoing “bench” that promotes a range of programmed activities including hanging out, learning, and performing. Their design includes flexibility to emphasize the fact that visitors may want to create their own unique experiences within the space. The group’s social interactions outside of school and home served as an inspiration for “One Bench, One Love,” and as a result, the project serves as a safe third space for those interactions to continue and to be cultivated.
