?? Save BEACON: Moab’s Future Depends on Afterschool! ?? For 20 years, BEACON Afterschool has provided free, high-quality programming to K-12 students in Grand County, Utah. We serve over 400 students annually, offering academic support, enrichment activities, and career preparation at three school sites: ? Helen M. Knight Elementary (K-6) – Academic support & enrichment ? Margaret L. Hopkin Middle School (7-8) – Social-emotional learning & career exploration ? Grand County High School (9-12) – Workforce training & college/career readiness ?? The Crisis Due to state and federal grant cuts, BEACON faces a $150,000 annual funding gap and will close by December 2025 without new support. This is part of a nationwide crisis, with 30% of afterschool programs reducing services or shutting down. ?? Why Afterschool Matters ? Boosts Academic Success – Students improve grades, attendance, and graduation rates. ? Reduces Juvenile Crime – Youth crime rates rise 50% between 3-6 PM when students are unsupervised. ? Supports Working Families – BEACON saves Moab families $600,000 annually in childcare costs. ? This crisis disproportionately impacts working families, creating a significant barrier to access to quality childcare. BEACON Afterschool Program: A Beacon of Hope At BEACON Afterschool, we understand the challenges Moab families face. We are a dedicated afterschool program serving over 250 K-8 students throughout the school year, offering a blend of enrichment activities, academic support, and family engagement opportunities.
