What better way to end this Black History Month than talking about the Mayor of St. Louis? Tishaura O. Jones is the first Black woman elected Mayor of St. Louis in 2021. Before her time as the Mayor, she was the Democratic Committeewoman of the 8th Ward, served twice in the Missouri House of Representatives and was the first Black woman to be the Assistant Minority Floor Leader in Missouri. Additionally, she was the first Black woman to be elected as the Treasurer of St. Louis from 2013-2021. In her time as mayor, she invested millions in our communities (including our streets), helped lower violent crime by over 40% this past year, and continues to work towards data-driven strategies to put St. Louis back on the map. Your Place (no, not your house) is a family buiness in South City serving homestyle meals in a cozy, homestyle setting. The plates are just like food that would be served at home, if you were lucky enough to have some really good chefs in your family. I can't even find the words to describe the food here, you just need to go get yourself some. ID: Black background with a green, red, yellow, and black border. "Vegan food is delicious, just hear me out." In 2008, Chef Reine Keis blessed St. Louis and vegans by opening Sweetart (@sweetartstlouis), a 100% vegan bakeshop + cafe at 2203 S 39th Street. Sometimes the daily special is called a "Big Poppa," which is SweetArt's version of a Big Mac. If it's not, get a Zora Neale Hurston with fries and cookie. Banana pudding if they have it. Say it with me now: WE LOVE THE DRIP COMMUNITY COFFEEHOUSE!!!!! They call you family when you walk in. Delicious and affordable coffee (sourced from a Black-owned roastery, California's Red Bay Coffee) and food (all made in-house!!) LaTosha Baker opened the Drip to provide a third place to the people in our City; the coffee part came second. The space is beautifully designed in a way that welcomes everyone. Seriously, if you haven't been, you need to go visit now. The Drip is an example of what businesses can be for a community when they prioritize people over profits.
