关于我们

Minnesota’s public health system is known as one of the best in the nation. It's built upon a strong partnership between the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), local public health agencies, tribal governments and a range of other organizations. MDH's mission is to protect, maintain and improve the health of all Minnesotans. It has about 1,500 employees and an annual budget of approximately $500 million in state, federal and fee-based funds.

  • Public health laboratories across the country have an early and critical role when it comes to an infectious disease outbreak. When it comes to new contagions, public health laboratories are often the first to develop, test, and perform diagnostic testing early on in an outbreak. Read about our role when it comes to combatting emerging infectious diseases quickly and effectively in our PHL Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/gk272j25

    • Scientist wearing protective gear and working in a biosafety cabinet while preparing specimens for Mpox testing.
  • Bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi are evolving and developing ways to defeat or resist antimicrobial agents like antibiotics. The emergence of antimicrobial-resistant organisms means that infections typically defeated by common antimicrobials have become more difficult to treat, leading to more illnesses and deaths. Read about how our staff perform highly specialized tests that allow them to respond to outbreaks, characterize and track different mechanisms of resistance, and detect new kinds of resistance in the pathogens that most concern public health officials in our PHL Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/gR6xUQXU

    • Scientist holding an agar plate and measuring the clear area around a white disc which has an antibiotic on it to analyze the susceptibility of different bacteria to antibiotics.
  • When the Minnesota Department of Health and other American public health institutions fight an infectious disease like COVID-19, it is important to know where the pathogen is spreading. Traditionally, it is discovered after people have reported the symptoms and received diagnoses at hospitals. Read about how studying wastewater data can help scientists detect infectious diseases in a community even before data from doctor’s offices or hospitals is reported to public health officials in our PHL Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/gZv7eQFn

  • In 2017, the opioid epidemic claimed a then-record 421 Minnesotan lives. The problem extended beyond opioids alone; many overdoses resulted from a combination of substances. To gain more information, the Minnesota Department of Health initiated the Minnesota Drug Overdose and Substance Use Surveillance Activity (MNDOSA) project to understand substance misuse and drug overdose patterns in real time. Read about how our Public Health Laboratory uses a high-resolution testing method that can identify over 1,000 substances to help inform clinicians, community partners, and the public about substance use trends and can guide prevention efforts in our PHL Annual Report: https://lnkd.in/gSib2rQm

    • Text reads, "MDH tests samples from MNDOSA cases with severe or unusual symptoms of substance use to identify the substances involved. MDH uses a high-resolution testing method that can identify nearly 1,000 substances. This data can inform clinicians, community partners, and the public about substance use trends and can guide prevention efforts."
