The UMN School of Public Health launches a new center to test and implement dementia care. Nearly seven million people in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s and related diseases—a number that has more than doubled in the last 20 years. To address the issue, the School of Public Health and partner institutions founded the Establishing Mechanisms of Benefit to Reinforce the Alzheimer’s Care Experience center, which will focus on identifying and testing what makes dementia interventions work to adapt them successfully in a variety of care settings. Improving the health and healthcare of older adults across Minnesota.
关于我们
A goal of the Minnesota Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (MN GWEP) is to facilitate and strengthen meaningful support and collaboration of key partners in the geriatrics field. The University of Minnesota and eight community partners are working to: 1) Provide greater access to community education in aging and dementia, 2) Improve geriatrics training in health professions, and 3) Transform primary care clinical training and practice sites to provide Age-Friendly care. The Minnesota Northstar Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (MN GWEP) is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Additional funding for the Minnesota Northstar GWEP is provided by a gracious gift from the Otto Bremer Trust. The Minnesota Northstar GWEP is also supported by the University of Minnesota Office of Academic Clinical Affairs.

Congratulations to Dr. Joseph Gaugler and colleagues on receiving a notice of grant award from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) for their AD/ADRD Roybal Center, "Establishing Mechanisms of Benefit to Reinforce the Alzheimer's Care Experience" (EMBRACE)! ?? https://lnkd.in/g_g-XdG4

Understanding why a dementia care intervention works is critical to guiding successful dissemination and implementation in community, healthcare, or home settings. It is with this in mind that my colleagues and I are thrilled to announce that we have received a notice of grant award from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) for our AD/ADRD Roybal Center, "Establishing Mechanisms of Benefit to Reinforce the Alzheimer's Care Experience" (EMBRACE) (P30AG086642). Andrea Gilmore Bykovskyi of the UW School of Medicine and Public Health and I will direct EMBRACE and helm the Center's Administrative Core.?Two of the most esteemed scholars in dementia care, Laura N. Gitlin of Drexel University's College of Nursing and Health Professions and Nancy Hodgson of the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, will co-lead EMBRACE's Behavioral Intervention Development Core. We are also thrilled to have as part of EMBRACE multiple national experts who will provide consultation and guidance to EMBRACE Investigators throughout the lifecycle of intervention development: Heather Allore of Yale School of Medicine; Marie Boltz and Kimberly Van Haitsma, Ph.D. of the Penn State Ross and Carol Nese College of Nursing; Richard Fortinksy of The University of Connecticut School of Medicine; David Roth, Professor Emeritus of Johns Hopkins Medicine; and Sheryl Zimmerman of the University of North Carolina Sheps Center for Health Services Research. Two experienced professionals on our Families and LTC Projects team will coordinate EMBRACE: Katie Louwagie and Robyn Birkeland.? ? EMBRACE will support a minimum of six and up to ten total dementia care intervention trials (each trial may last from 1-3 years) designed to identify and test mechanisms of action that drive benefits for people living with dementia and those who care for them in home and community settings. EMBRACE will support two dementia care trials to test dementia care intervention mechanisms in diverse communities in Year 1, led by Lauren Parker, PhD, MPH of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Manka N. of the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. In the upcoming weeks, we will announce a request for applications to support new trials in June 2025, so please stay tuned! We are grateful to NIA for this support and are excited to work closely with our program officers, Drs. Melissa Riddle and Lisa Onken. We also look forward to partnering with other NIA Centers throughout the NIA Research Centers Collaborative Network (RCCN) to advance this essential work. ? #alzheimers #dementia #dementiacare #intervention #science #implementation #dissemination ?
