Member Kate is serving at the Boys & Girls Club Twin Cities where she has been collecting and analyzing data on food waste by tracking the amount diverted into compost daily and weighing food donations that would have otherwise gone to waste. She has also been implementing educational garden programming with youth, creating social media posts, working on her site’s newsletter, and developing lesson plans, all while completing the Master Gardener Program! #MnGreenCorps #AmeriCorps

March 22nd was World Water Day and this year's theme is Glacial Preservation. In Minnesota, we understand wanting to protect bodies of water-it is a top reason members join our program. Member Gabriella is serving at the City of Edina and is providing outreach and education programs for waste reduction, organics recycling, and sustainability initiatives to increase public awareness and participation to achieve the city’s Climate Action Plan goals. Recently, Edina City Council Member Julie Risser attended one of Gabriella’s presentations and it resulted in an amazing sustainable behavior change! The Minnesota Zoo has hosted MN GreenCorps members for several years! This year, member Evelyn is serving in the stormwater and forestry topic area working on projects that include chloride monitoring and education, restoration planning, acoustic monitoring for birds and bats, and bird strike surveys. Evelyn has used her training budget to become a Minnesota Master Naturalist and a certified tree inspector! Members in this topic area assist with implementing initiatives to reduce waste, capture reusable materials, work with partners, and conduct surveys. For example, last program year member Zach helped expand Carver County's organics collection, established and promoted a deconstruction program, supported Minnesota Composting Council initiatives, and enhanced food rescue programming. The City of St. James is a new host site this year! Member Grace’s projects include initiatives for Bike and Walk to School day, a sustainability webpage for the City’s website, and getting the City from Step 3 to being recognized as a Step 5 City for GreenStep Cities.
