Why do we test bilge pumps monthly, and why does the USCG require double hose clamps on all saltwater hoses? Let me tell you a little story!! I arrived at a clients 56' M/Y yesterday to the bilge pump running, and reduced AC s/w overboard discharge. When I opened the engine room hatch there was ALOT of water in the engine room, water spraying across the back of the space, and the bilge pump running. I Shut AC's/pump down and the water stopped; and clean up/repair commenced! The AC manifold fitting only had one hose clamp, and it failed. Fortunately, the bilge pumps functioned properly (they are tested monthly). This could have been a very bad ending!!! It is absolutely critical that bilge pumps get tested at least monthly, and all s/w hoses have double hose clamps. And don't forget to periodically inspect the hose clamps and replace them when rusted.
