Yesterday, I had the privilege of sitting down with Caress Witherspoon, MBA, the incoming president of the Western Reserve Chapter of SHRM, along with an incredible group of HR leaders and students. I kept things real, as always. We talked openly about where we are as a society, sparked some BIG ideas around the future of work, and explored how HR is uniquely positioned to tackle workplace challenges I've seen evolve over the past few years. I truly believe HR is uniquely positioned to drive transformational change. And as conscious leaders, we get to shape whether AI becomes a force for connection or disconnection. That's a huge responsibility and exactly why I'm so passionate about these conversations. Here's what we're facing: - Employer trust is dropping fast. The 2025 Edelman Trust Barometer revealed trust in employers to "do the right thing" dipped by 5 points in just one year. - Burnout is real and growing. A 2024 SHRM report showed: 44% of U.S. workers feel burned out, 45% are emotionally drained by their jobs, and 51% feel completely spent by day's end. - The meaning crisis is a real thing. With AI accelerating change, many workers are questioning not just how they work, but why they work. It's deep stuff. But here's the exciting part... HR already embodies those deeply human skills.. empathy, compassion, vulnerability. They're the champions of human well-being. So now, it's about: - Cultivating a culture of transparency, where AI isn't some unknown threat but a tool we use with intention. - Enhancing psychological safety and trust, so people feel supported to innovate, learn, and grow alongside AI. - Inspiring curiosity and experimentation, encouraging a human-centered approach to AI literacy, where people feel empowered to explore, adapt, and evolve with technology.
