? NEW BLOG POST ? As MHD recognizes #BlackHistoryMonth, we take this opportunity to honor the contributions of Black pioneers in public health. In this post, we highlight the accomplishments of Jessie Sleet Scales, the first Black public health nurse in the United States. Scales’ work laid the foundation for community-based nursing, a philosophy that continues to guide current public health initiatives. Even today, her legacy continues to live on as MHD prepares to launch the Neighborhood Nursing pilot program, an initiative deeply rooted in Scales’ approach to care. visit milwaukee.gov/blog to read this, as well as other inspiring public health stories! https://lnkd.in/gW8v46NC

Last week, the City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) had the honor of hosting U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Deputy Chief of Staff Angela Ramirez and Regional Director MichaelCabonargi. They met with Commissioner of Health Mike Totoraitis and Deputy Commissioner Bailey Murph to discuss how MHD is strengthening its workforce to meet the evolving needs of public health. Thank you to everyone who joined Versiti Blood Center of Wisconsin, City of Milwaukee Health Department Commissioner Mike Totoraitis, PhD, and our community during the annual Sickle Cell Summit. The event featured a panel discussion with Sickle Cell Warriors of Wisconsin (SCWWI) and other stakeholders, focusing on the ongoing support needed for families affected by Sickle Cell Disease. Discussions on barriers to care and the stigma patients and families face are essential for raising awareness and driving change. As Commissioner Totoraitis stated, "Our goal is to bring together experts, advocates, and community members to discuss the challenges faced by those living with sickle cell disease. By collaborating with local organizations, we hope to strengthen our community’s approach to this public health crisis." Special thanks to all who made this event possible!
