Linking tax and finance more closely was always my number 1 objective when inhouse. So much of my frustration came from poor quality data and lack of timely visibility of finance numbers and workings. The old classic of having to wait weeks for a response to your request as to why the tax pack numbers are not aligned to the account disclosure etc to then get sent a breakdown that doesn’t add up to any of the amounts you queried…. Well that can go away by obtaining greater visibility directly for yourself. Having visibility of the accounts and their linked workings within the same platform as the tax workings helps increase transparency. Along with visibility of any supporting journals this greatly helps to reduce the back and forth between tax and finance, often saving weeks of waiting for email responses (which when received if you’re like me you have to remind yourself as to what it was all about and review the whole accounts/computation again adding even more time). In fact, emails can be cut out completely, by raising queries directly against the workings - giving everyone clearer visibility of what is being queried and maintaining a clearer record so that nothing falls through the cracks and retains the knowledge for future years. Not to mention you can help avoid the need to query altogether by pulling data directly from the accounts into the tax comp. Helping to save time and reduce risk.
