  • The Mizzou Alumni Association and the Alumni Association Student Board recently announced the recipients of the 2025 Mizzou 18 and Mizzou ’39 awards, which recognize outstanding University of Missouri students. One of the recipients, Dinah West, one Mizzou’s Career Center very own, was honored with the Mizzou 18 award. This prestigious award recognizes 18 graduate and professional students in the final year of their degree eligibility. Recipients are chosen for their world-class research, collaboration with faculty and staff, and demonstrated leadership with undergraduate students. Reflecting on her time at Mizzou, West shared the valuable lessons she has learned: "If you see a need, fill it. If you have a question, ask. If you are lost, ask for help. You are only as good as the people around you and as strong as the people you lift up. I am deeply honored to have received the Mizzou 18, as it is a testament to these very lessons—whether through my role as President of the NAACP, a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, a mentor in Promoting and Advocating Sisterhood Through Service, or any other organization, job, project, or initiative where I have had the opportunity to serve, lead, and uplift others—both as an undergraduate and now as a full-time graduate student.” Read on to learn more about each award and see a list of this year’s honorees: https://buff.ly/lwUe53S

  • Mizzou students often express their frustration about the lack of communication that occurs in their job search process. Many report hearing nothing or being ghosted in the interview process. In a recent LinkedIn article author, Asad A. Mohammed Aslam explains ways that the employers can make the process easier. Here’s an overview of her thoughtful assessment. Link: https://buff.ly/c1mp2mz Redesigning the ATS System Solution: The technology of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) should evolve to evaluate candidates’ qualifications, experience, and skills holistically, rather than relying solely on keyword matching. Outcome: A human-centric ATS will enhance hiring accuracy and prevent qualified candidates from being overlooked due to missed keywords. Streamlining the Application Process Solution: Job application platforms should allow candidates to submit one profile or resume for multiple positions, eliminating the need for repetitive forms. Outcome: This will save time, reduce burnout, and enable candidates to focus on quality rather than quantity in their applications. Enhancing "Easy Apply" Features Solution: Platforms like LinkedIn should improve Easy Apply by incorporating direct feedback and communication options for candidates to track application status. Outcome: This will increase candidate engagement, reduce uncertainty, and foster greater transparency in the hiring process. Employer and Candidate Engagement Solution: Employers should provide timely feedback on application status, including brief explanations for rejections. Outcome: Clear communication will build trust, reduce frustration, and improve the relationship between job seekers and employers. If you are in Human Resources or are involved in the hiring of your company, we welcome your thoughts and comments.
