We’re thrilled to celebrate the grand opening of the Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth campus expansion at Washington School for the Deaf! The new Divine Academic Building, Hunter Gymnasium and fully accessible Despo’s Playground present an innovative model for learning environments tailored to enhance American Sign Language (ASL)-English bilingual instructional practices, facilitate communication and extend the sensory reach of WSD’s empowered students and educators. DeafSpace design principles are incorporated throughout the campus with the use of mass timber and vibration-friendly flooring, expansive low-glare windows for abundant natural light while avoiding eye strain, wider hallways and low-slope stairs for active ASL communication, and extensive visual connectivity between spaces. Yesterday’s ribbon cutting ceremony with Governor Jay Inslee was a landmark occasion for the K-12 school, Deaf and hard of hearing community, Washington state educational system and project contributors. UCI Verano 8 Graduate Student Housing is a 2024 Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) National Award of Merit - Educational Facilities Winner! The University of California, Irvine’s new graduate student housing was designed to provide unique student-centered residences that addressed critical priorities for UCI’s graduate students, specifically affordability, community, inclusive design, sustainability and privacy. The LEED Platinum and Fitwel certified project strives to optimize health benefits from detailed material selection to the neighborhood scale. Well-being is supported throughout the community with active stairs, biophilic design strategies, community gardens and interspersed lounge spaces for planned and spontaneous gatherings to foster social connection. Join us for a guided tour of and presentation about the University of Washington Haring Center educational and research facility, to learn about their specialized mission and the comprehensive design-build renovation that transformed all aspects of the building’s systems, from seismic upgrades to improved site circulation and play areas. The Louisiana Children’s Museum has won an Honor Award for General Design from the American Society of Landscape Architects 2024 Professional Awards! This project is recognized for design and sustainability excellence, social equity, resilience and diversity and inclusion. Louisiana Children's Museum is a new model for children’s museums: a place where children and families in one of the nation’s most underserved regions would have a wealth of ways to explore the artistic, sensory and natural worlds. The site design integrates mature live oaks, the new museum building, and experiential outdoor spaces that demonstrate solutions to some of the challenging issues facing New Orleans and the world, including coastal shoreline loss, water management, food insecurity and climate adaptation. ? Congratulations to the University of Montana on the groundbreaking of a new residence hall this week! This project will be the largest student life facility on campus and home to more than 600 students when complete in 2026. Located at a prominent campus corner, the building defines a welcoming, accessible gateway to the university. Landscape design will engage and celebrate the community, local ecology and the university’s distinction as a state of Montana arboretum. The project is designed by Mithun (architecture, landscape architecture and interior design) in association with MMW Architects, executive architect and collaborating designer. Additional team members include Associated Construction Engineering (MEP), WGM GROUP, Inc. (civil) and DCI Engineers (structural). Dick Anderson Construction is the general contractor.

We had an amazing time visiting the Enso Village campus last week for their opening ribbon ceremony! Residents and staff welcomed the community for a reflective celebration, accompanied by a live painting of an enso by Zen scholar, artist and activist Kaz Tanahashi. Enso Village is a 16-acre, 275-unit mixed housing development in Healdsburg, California, and the first Zen-inspired senior community on the West Coast. This agrarian village is designed to promote self-reflection, growth and active, healthy living for seniors while reflecting the highest level of land stewardship and design.?Mithun led the design (architecture and landscape architecture) in association with HKIT Architects, executive architect, and Gates + Associates, executive landscape architect. How can we transform yesterday’s spec office into the destination workplace of tomorrow? In response to record-high vacancy rates, Mithun recently helped a Texas-based developer explore how a typical commercial office could be redesigned as an innovative #masstimber structure, prioritizing wellness, community and environmental responsibility. Surprisingly, the transformation was possible without impacting the existing entitlement, including FAR, general building massing and below-grade parking.
