Featured in Architectural Record, the new Princeton University Meadows Apartments is tailored to meet the needs of today’s graduate students within a high-performing development that supports the university’s goals of carbon neutrality by 2046. Home to 604 graduate students, the vibrant residential community sits at the gateway to the new Meadows campus. The “three-building complex—organized around loose courtyards and boasting visually rhythmic facades—embodies a longtime priority of Princeton to provide affordable graduate housing.” Fingering out towards the verdant Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, the buildings thoughtfully intersperse 13 different apartment configurations that reflect the diverse needs of today’s students, mixing up the unit types to encourage interaction across groups. At Princeton and across the nation, affordability and community-building are among the top priorities for graduate students, explains Mithun partner Bill LaPatra. “Many are lonely, many are trying to figure out how to make friends, and many are worrying about putting a meal on the table and paying rent.” Gathering spaces, biophilic design principles and healthy materials are woven throughout to support occupant well-being. With a high-performance envelope and building systems, Meadows Apartments is one of the largest Passive House certified projects in the country.
