We had a blast hosting sophomores from Highline Public Schools Maritime High School last week for the first creative session of their pier design project. The “Designing Downstream” workshop kicks off a multiweek project-based learning program in which students are challenged to design a pier in the most resource- and cost-effective way possible. Students broke into small groups to envision unique community spaces, consulting Mithun professionals as they navigate the design process. In the coming weeks, students will work to research, analyze costs and refine their projects. Our team is looking forward to visiting this inspiring class again for their final presentations at the end of the month! Huge thanks to the 2025 mentors Emma Gaulke-Janowski, NCIDQ, LEED AP, Abisai Martinez Laredo, Alexander Ayala, Carl Dominguez, AIA LEED AP BD and C, Erik Larson, Maria Garcia Llop, Toby Peterson, Ezra Homison, Lani Lee and JoAnn Hindmarsh Wilcox, AIA LEED AP for a successful workshop.

We are saddened to share the passing of Barney, a 39-year-old harbor seal, beloved member of the Seattle Aquarium family and our neighbor on the Seattle waterfront. We were honored to collaborate with the Aquarium on the renovation of their Harbor Seal exhibit, where Barney lived the last 12 years of his life. This project increased the tank’s water depth, expanded the seals’ dry resting area (or haul-out space) for sunbathing, installed acrylic viewing panels on three sides and created arena seating to accommodate over 100 visitors. Getting to know Barney was a highlight for our team. His playful antics have delighted generations! Barney fans can find his obituary on the Seattle Aquarium website: https://lnkd.in/gYrykC6K

Maceo May Apartments is featured in Urban Land Magazine! The affordable housing project is showcased among ten exemplary resilient developments that model ways to prepare for climate stresses and shocks. Maceo May Apartments was the first building completed as part of a master-planned redevelopment of Treasure Island. The six-story 100% affordable housing community incorporates 105 homes for formerly homeless Veterans and their families. The building’s highly resilient and sustainable design approach was essential for fulfilling the core purpose of the building—delivering stability, supportive services and well-being for its residents. “The San Francisco office of Mithun designed the building to withstand multiple challenges including sea level rise, power shutoffs and smoke caused by wildfires, extreme heat and seismic events.” To learn more about performance highlights, read the article by Ron Nyren: https://lnkd.in/gK43HkPs Additional detail about the building design and key strategies to ensure resident wellbeing at times of stress is available via the Urban Land Institute Developing Urban Resilience case study: https://lnkd.in/gTfymhWy Maceo May was developed by Chinatown Community Development Center and Swords to Plowshares. The Mithun Seattle office on Pier 56 has been awarded Living Building Challenge? (LBC) Petal certification, featuring the Materials, Equity and Beauty petals! The rigorous review standard required a deep collaboration between designers, manufacturers and consultants to understand the sourcing and ‘ingredients list’ of each building and finish material. Nearly 1,000 different products were considered for the project! Eighty-nine of those products were rejected for not meeting the Red List standard and another 133 products were considered but not used. Ultimately, 724 reviewed LBC products were installed and over 100 advocacy letters were sent, and calls made to manufacture reps requesting their future participation in material disclosure. Interventions with FSC certified wood complement the historic pier structure, while a collection of amenity and active collaboration spaces at the center of the office—including a casual crit space, makerspace, materials lab and kitchen with espresso machine—bring creative energy and laughter to the daily experience. “The Mithun office showcases a thoughtful blend of material selection, salvaged materials, and collaboration with local artists, creating an inspiring and engaging environment… Ultimately, a project transcends its physical attributes when it fosters a connection to something larger than itself, embodying a spirit or relationship that resonates with its surroundings,” Living Future shares in the Pier 56 Mithun Office case study. To learn more: https://lnkd.in/g85zk_XT Mithun provided integrated design services including architecture and interior design. The design team also includes Abbott Construction (general contractor), MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions (mechanical and plumbing), Kemly Electric Inc (electrical), Coughlin Porter Lundeen (structural engineer) and Materially Better (IES) (certification consultant). We are pleased to announce that Mithun partner Deb Guenther is serving on the national American Society of Landscape Architects advisory group to develop an updated, profession-wide Climate and Biodiversity Action Plan. Deb will specifically work to update the plan for the next five years with a focus on equity. “I so appreciate the opportunity to work with many of our Mithun friends and colleagues on scaling up a response to the biodiversity and climate challenge,” Guenther shared. “We will be looking for the ways that the people who are most affected day-to-day are guiding the responses that are most relevant and effective in their neighborhood.” The Climate Action Plan, first released in 2022, seeks to transform the practice of landscape architecture by 2040 through actions taken by ASLA and its members focused on biodiversity and ecological restoration, climate mitigation and adaptation, equity and economic development. The new task force of climate and biodiversity leaders will work on a broadened scope—the climate and biodiversity crises will be treated as equal priorities, and the focus will be on actions that tackle both crises in an equitable way.
