?? End of the Year Summary - MIT Sloan Energy and Climate Club's Inaugural San Francisco Bay-Area Trek ?? This March, a passionate group of students from the Sloan Energy and Climate Club (SECC) at MIT traveled from Cambridge to the vibrant San Francisco Bay area, the nexus of technology and startup innovation. For years, SECC has been instrumental in organizing local treks to prominent climate hubs like Boston and New York. However, this was our first venture into the San Francisco Bay area, an exciting expansion of our horizons. From March 19-22, participants immersed themselves in the dynamic world of climate-tech and energy. We had the privilege of meeting with founders, change-makers, and investors from various segments of the industry—from pioneering startups to established energy utilities. This was a golden opportunity for all trek participants to delve into diverse business strategies, witness industrial-scale solutions firsthand, and engage in in-depth discussions about the future of climate investments. The journey spanned the breadth of the Bay-area, with visits to company facilities in San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, San Leandro, Richmond, and Menlo Park. Each visit offered us unique insights and further fueled our commitment to driving forward the energy transition. On May 8, amidst all the deadlines and end-term mayhem, MIT Sloan Energy & Climate Club hosted Pete Bastien, President & Partner, Hitachi Ventures for a Lunch & Learn session on Climate Tech Venture Capital Investing. For me, it was a wonderful opportunity to coordinate this session's fireside chat section. We covered various aspects of Climate Tech Venture Capital Investing including: 1. Emerging technologies in the climate tech sector?that excite a VC the most. 2. Biggest challenges a VC faces when funding early-stage Climate Tech startups, and how do the VCs address them? 3. How do governmental policies and international agreements shape the investment landscape in Climate Tech? 4. How diversified is Hitachi Ventures' Climate Tech portfolio, and how do they manage risk in such a rapidly evolving sector? 5. Advice for entrepreneurs entering the Climate Tech space with new innovations. We gained valuable insights from Pete on exploring how to fund and commercialize cutting-edge technologies that aid in global decarbonization and what the Hitachi Group is doing in this direction. Special thanks to Amar Dayal for all the help.

We hosted Adam Sherman from Wood Mackenzie for a Lunch & Learn session on how energy companies are leveraging technology. Thank you for sharing your views on how companies can use data more effectively in the energy industry--from supply chain execution, to cost analytics, and supplier management. Thanks everyone for all the questions and interest!
Fun interactive L&L session with Adam Sherman at the MIT Sloan Energy & Climate Club! Thank you for revisiting us and sharing how technology + data are being leveraged in energy companies. One key takeaway in the first photo here: Energy project costs are underestimated by 10-40%! Interesting to see how data is being leveraged to have better spend intelligence, monitor risks for a company’s supplier base, estimate carbon intensity related to supply chain activity, do cost-modeling for renewable assets, etc. Thanks to all who joined the discussion!

?? Energizing Thoughts from MIT Alumni in Energy & Climate ?? Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting an enlightening panel discussion with MIT alumni making significant impact in the energy and climate sector. A huge thank you to Andrew Mowry, Allison Hallock, Alexander Potter, Elizabeth McKean, and Aleksandr Rakitin for sharing their career stories and insights into industry trends. Key takeaways: 1) Career Pivots: For those looking to enter the energy industry, showing a genuine interest is crucial. Once you're part of this dynamic field, your past industry becomes less relevant—what matters more is what you can do to contribute now. 2) Industry Challenges: We're navigating through high interest rates, carbon emission regulations, and persistent supply chain shortages, alongside the rise in electrification. These challenges affect both the supply side—power generators and developers—and the demand side—large energy consumers and managers. Yet, these short-term headwinds also uncover significant opportunities. 3) Opportunities Abound: There has never been a better time to join the energy industry. The sector's current complexities and the transition towards sustainable practices open numerous doors for those ready to step in and make a difference. ? Thanks to all who joined us for this discussion! MIT Sloan Energy & Climate Club #MITAlumni #SloanEnergyandClimateClub #EnergyIndustry #Climate #PanelDiscussion
