Following MIT's motto, "mens et manus," or "mind and hand," MIT Sloan Action Learning is a teaching method where students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it to a real business challenge. ? Credit-bearing courses rather than internships ? Small group teams of three to six students ? Real host companies The result? At the end of the term, teams present deliverables that their hosts can implement immediately. Each year, we manage around 20 academic courses that include more than 250 experiential learning projects, involving almost 900 students and more than 200 external host organizations.

  • Today was an amazing kickoff for Hackathon25, with panels covering Agentic AI and EdTech, and their real-world applications in healthcare and tech industries. We were honored to host expert panelists from EdTech, multinational companies, hospitals, and professors and researchers hailing from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dartmouth College, and Northeastern University. We look forward to seeing how our students plan to tackle this real-world challenge during the presentation portion of Hackathon25 on Monday.     I recently had the opportunity to work on a research project with Xinxin (Grace) Wang, CFA, FRM and MSCI Inc. through the MIT Finance Lab 2024. The research focused on the low-carbon strategies of energy and utilities companies and how these strategies impact their financial performance. It was an immersive, fast-paced introduction to the intriguing field of Climate and ESG analytics. It was an incredible experience that definitely served as a solid foundation for future endeavor in the area!

    I’m delighted to announce the completion of the tenth #msci #mitsloan Fin Lab project. It’s astonishing to think that a decade has flown by since I began sponsoring students in this action-learning, graduate-level course. The class offers students the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in challenging finance research projects that bridge the gaps between theory and practice. This year, students Pincha R., Alexander Genoe, Stella Kotzabasakis, and Jinghan C. dove into climate and financial data to explore low carbon transition signals and performance metrics in energy and utility companies. Their teamwork, effective communication, and sharp analytical skills have been absolutely remarkable. Reflecting on a decade of mentoring driven and talented graduate students, I am deeply honored by the trust these brilliant and ambitious minds have placed in me as their mentor. Witnessing the students’ intellect and determination unfold, guiding them as they navigate the intricate bridge between theory and real-world challenges, and then watching their careers blossom—some joining me as colleagues, others leading the charge in the financial industry—has filled me with an immense sense of pride and humility.     ?? Exciting day at MIT Sloan School of Management—Pitch Day for Generative AI Lab! Today, companies pitched their cutting-edge #generativeAI projects to #MITSloan students as we officially launch Generative AI Lab (GenAI-Lab)—a new, hands-on MIT Sloan Action Learning course sponsored by the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy. With faculty, John Horton (MIT IDE Research Group Lead), Tim Valicenti, and Michiel Bakker, this course pairs student teams with organizations tackling real-world #AIchallenges. From developing #AI prototypes to crafting AI strategy roadmaps, students will apply generative AI to #business transformation across industries like #biopharma, #finance, #media, and more. Looking forward to seeing how these student-led AI projects take shape and push the boundaries of innovation!

  • This fall, the MIT Sloan Action Learning Office worked with G-Lab faculty Simon Johnson and Michellana Jester to pilot an MIT Sloan staff G-Lab project team. The goal was for six staff members from various MIT Sloan departments – Christina Beck (Sloan Educational Services), Jackie Dunn (Student Life), Sebastien Delisle (Action Learning), Jean Lyon (MBA), Katie (Callahan) McGrath (MFin), and?Suzanne Styffe?(EMBA & SFMBA) – to participate in the course and fully immerse themselves in the student experience.?The team was paired with Asia School of Business (ASB), whose project focused on a go-to-market strategy for their Agile Continuous Education program and lateral entry into their degree programs.? ? Throughout the fall and IAP, the team lived MIT’s motto of “mens et manus”, or “mind and hand.” They attended G-Lab classes, met with ASB staff and MIT staff affiliated with ASB, conducted research on education in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, and ramped up their knowledge on launching new products/programs – something many of them had never done before! In January they traveled to the heart of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for a one-week onsite with ASB. Here they tested their background knowledge and theories by meeting with ASB colleagues in person, observing and evaluating the school’s launch of its new program.? ? “The G-Lab staff pilot was an incredible opportunity to collaborate on a crucial and timely project with a cross-departmental team. Sharing ideas with ASB colleagues facing similar challenges and bringing fresh insights back to?our?teams?was invaluable.?We are?immensely grateful for the time, space, and support to develop and strengthen professional skills beyond our?daily work.
